"Spoke with UTEP, they were not interested," James tweeted on Wednesday. "As an FYI, we offered to travel to El Paso in 13."
UTEP athletic director Bob Stull, who is in middle of a football coaching search, was not immediately available to reply.
"I am confident they did what was best for their program given all the variables, just as Savannah State was best for us," James tweeted in a follow-up comment.
Miami scheduled Savannah State in the 2013 slot where they were trying to play at UTEP.
The Miners currently have (or will have when Conference USA finalizes its schedule) six road games and five home games slated for 2013 and are looking for a home game to complete the schedule.
UTEP will play nonconference road games at New Mexico State and Colorado State and a nonconference home game with New Mexico. That leaves one nonconference game, presumably at home, to add.
