Scranton detectives filed charges against a city man for stealing copper downspouts from a city church and issued a warrant for his arrest.
Police said Bernett Gruber, 33, 607 Quincy Ave., stole the downspouts from the church on July 15 and 16 and later sold them for scrap.
Detective Michael Schultz got an anonymous tip that led to Mr. Gruber on July 17, the day The Times-Tribune first reported the string of thefts. One week before those thefts, another theft of copper downspouts had occurred at the church. Mr. Gruber has not been charged in that theft.
The tipster told Detective Schultz the thief sold the spouts at Booth's & Son Scrap Yard Inc., 125 Railroad Ave., and that he drove a black PT Cruiser. The scrap yard told Detective Schultz a man driving a black PT Cruiser brought in copper downspouts on July 16. They provided police with paperwork identifying Mr. Gruber and a receipt from the transaction. His address is one block from the church, but he was not home when Detective Schultz paid a visit.
Mr. Gruber faces theft and related charges for two of three thefts from Covenant Presbyterian Church on Olive Street within the past month.
Mr. Gruber was on probation and is also wanted on a bench warrant.
