Verizon Wireless had a very strong third quarter, as the nation's largest carrier added 1.8 million subscribers, thanks to a boom in smartphones sales.?
Of the new users, 1.5 million were the lucrative, postpaid users on a long-term contract. Overall, Verizon now has 95 million total subscribers and 90.4 million of those are of the postpaid variety.?
The company said it had 6.8 million smartphones sold and activated during the quarter and smartphones constituted more than 53 percent of Verizon's postpaid customer base. Verizon said it activated 3.1 million iPhones during the quarter, but TechCrunch points out?that only 651,000 of those were of the iPhone 5 variety, partially due to supply constraints.?
Verizon continues to be the leader in 4G LTE, as it will hit its 400th market?this week while the competition is still in the early stages of its rollout. Verizon released seven 4G LTE devices during the third quarter and look for it to push forward with 4G LTE-only devices from now on, especially since the iPhone now supports this high-speed technology.?
The strong quarter comes at a relatively turbulent time in the mobile industry even though Verizon and AT&T are firmly in the top spots in terms of subscribers. Sprint and T-Mobile are in the third and fourth positions but those companies are gearing up for a shakeup.?
The Japanese giant Softbank is trying to acquire 70 percent of Sprint?and it will invest heavily into the carrier. T-Mobile is merging with MetroPCS?to create a strong fourth player that will be able to offer a robust 4G LTE network with value pricing.?
