GOP Candidates Should Pound Hypocritical Romney on Tax Returns (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The GOP presidential debates will again resume Saturday night, this time in Manchester, N.H., at Saint Anselm College. Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney has yet to release his tax returns, and has yet to make any bona fide commitment to release them if he wins the GOP nomination, as reported by The Hill.

The other GOP presidential hopefuls should pound on Romney Saturday night over his stand, and even take him to task for what he's trying to hide if the opening comes up regarding being transparent.

When it comes to being open with voters, Romney's gall over not releasing his tax returns goes back much longer than this presidential campaign season. The Washington Post reported that when he ran against Mass. Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1994, he called for the late iconic Democrat to release his tax returns to show he had "nothing to hide," yet wouldn't do so himself.

According to TPM, one tax strategy the very wealthy like Romney can take advantage of is "like having an unlimited 401(k) account." Imagine if the average American worker could treat their earnings like rich people do when it comes to how much they ultimately end up paying in taxes every year.

Romney's hypocrisy over expecting one rich person like the late Kennedy to do so while he feels he is above committing to being more transparent shows once again why he is so unsuitable to be the next leader of this nation. The double standards this man feels he can get away with are boundless, all because he's in the upper rungs of the "1 percent."

According to the Tax History Project, no candidate has to release his or her tax returns to the public, but it's been a common practice for presidents (and even 2008 Republican candidates Ariz. Sen. John McCain and then Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin) to do so for the last four decades, including that of the current president and vice president.

Yet Romney's smug demeanor as he attacks President Barack Obama continuously doesn't fool any discerning voters at all about what he's possibly trying to hide from the American people regarding his finances.
