Chinese look to Harry Potter to put magic in genetics courses

"Genetics greatly influence how a mother reacts during her pregnancy and how she rears her children. In Harry Potter, we can easily find such case studies in Harry and Voldemort, who are both suspected of having some of the same genes as Slytherin, and who live in a similar [wizard] environment," explained course lecturer Chen Suqin.

"Genetics is often viewed as very boring and a dry topic by students. But if they are Harry Potter fans, this course will help raise their curiosity and help them remember what they have learnt," added Chen, a self-confessed avid Potter admirer.

Since waving the magical Potter wand over the once shunned elective course, which runs for 36 hours and offers two degree credits, students numbers are now heavily oversubscribed, Chen said.

Harry Potter books and films are hugely popular in China.

The Chinese release of the last Hogwarts film ? The Deathly Hallows 2 - was delayed last July by the government, which was worried it might affect the box office attendance of the Communist Party's 90th Anniversary celebration epic, "Beginning of the Great Revival: The Founding of the Party".

Instead, thousands of impatient Potter fans flocked to counterfeit DVD shops to pick up poor quality foreign versions smuggled in to the country.

The prestigious Sun Yat-sen university is not the first to introduce J K Rowling's wizardry into its curriculum.

Durham University's education department offers students a 30-credit "Harry Potter and the Age of Illusion" module.

Course content includes "Gryffindor and Slytherin: prejudice and intolerance in the classroom".
