Westport Weston Y To Host First-Ever Holistic Health Day | The ...

WESTPORT, Conn. ? Try your hand at tai chi, enjoy a free acupuncture treatment or learn how to lower your stress through meditation at the Westport Weston Family Y next Saturday during the first-ever Holistic Health Day.

Throughout the day, Y members and nonmembers alike are invited to participate in a variety of free classes and activities from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

?We?re all excited about Holistic Health Day and the opportunity to educate our members and the public about the concept of holistic health, which is about using certain types of exercise and approaches to help integrate body, mind and spirit on the way toward complete health,? said Scott Smith, director of communications at the Y.

?The Family Y offers more than 50 group-fitness classes each week, and while many of our types of classes are well known to most fitness buffs, there are other disciplines that are really fun and effective but less well known,? he said. ?We at the Y are trying to take some of the mystery out of these time-honored holistic disciplines followed by millions, if not billions, in Asia and elsewhere in the world.?

One of the day?s activities will include an hourlong tai chi class taught by Peter DiGrazia. Often described as meditation in motion, tai chi is a low-impact, slow-motion martial art used to treat and prevent a variety of health conditions and alleviate stress. The class will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Y?s Bresslin Room.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Y instructor Michelle Quigley will lead a class on qigong, an ancient, Taoist self-healing technique. The class will be held in the Bresslin Room.

Judith Woolfe, a state licensed and nationally certified acupuncture specialist, will be on site all day giving free acupuncture treatments in the lobby of the Bedford building. She will also be available to answer questions about this ancient method used to relieve pain and treat a variety of issues, such as headaches, backaches, allergies and more.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., visitors can learn how to lower stress and anxiety levels, while improving focus and concentration, during a meditation class led by Y yoga instructor Matan Cohen-Citron. This class will be held in the Bresslin Room.

Other highlights of the day will include Robin?s Healing Kitchen, an informative lesson on how to make better food choices, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a class on Chinese internal healing exercises.? Also, David?s Tea will provide samples of hot and cold teas in the lobby of the Bedford building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration is not required. Classes and activities will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, contact Shelley Moll, the Y?s director of health and wellness, at?203-226-8981 Ext. 198 or smoll@westporty.org.
