Kuttanad Backwaters In Kerala

Kuttanad falls under three districts, namely, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam. This region has lowest altitude in India and is one of those few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. It is known for its vast stretch of paddy fields, coconut palms, canals and streams. But, it is Kuttanad backwaters that attract plenty of tourists to this region every year. Luxurious houseboats are available for them to cruise through these amazing backwaters while enjoying various facilities during their journeys. These boats, in recent times, have gone through several changes in terms of size and construction. These boats are constructed in an eco-friendly manner, using wood, coir and other natural materials. Interestingly, a houseboat can last for a very long time; even for generations, if proper maintenance is done on a regular basis. People cruising on these houseboats can get a glimpse of local lifestyle and beautiful natural surroundings. These waterways are also used for public transport and movement of goods to the markets. 'Karimeen', which is a popular local fish, serves as a great delicacy for tourists, who are in search of some mouth-watering treats while touring this region. Visitors to Kuttanad can also enjoy marvelous sights of ducks that are shepherded by men on boats.

More than a hundred years ago, the backwaters of Kuttanad were used as an important route for trade. Big-sized boats were used to carry heavy load of rice and spices that traveled greater distances. With the advent of modern trucks, this system of transport began losing its popularity with traders. As a result, the boats used for trade faced the threat of extinction. But, a clever move to convert these boats into a favorable way of touring the backwaters kept them afloat. With the development of tourism in recent times, the houseboats in Alleppey are becoming more stylish and innovative. Today, one can find many of them cruising through the backwaters, with some even having interiors that are tastefully furnished. While most of these houseboats are driven by oarsmen using bamboo poles, some are powered by modern engines. While cruising along the backwaters, tourists can get an opportunity to witness life in certain villages that many others are not able to find during their tours to Kuttanads attractions. This would be an experience which would provide some memorable moments for tourists to cherish for a very long time.

For those who are interested in exploring life along the backwaters, there are many options available in the form of houseboats or motorboats. Tourists can also find certain wayside eateries that provide local delicacies, including tapioca and backwater fish. The famous Pathiramanal Island is also a part of these backwaters and can be reached only by traveling in a boat. Its scenic beauty has been appreciated by many tourists who visit this island mainly using houseboats. This island is located in Vembanad Lake which has hundreds of such boats cruising through it. Tourists who are in Kerala and are planning a trip to Kuttanad can find many hotels and resorts that have come up near the backwaters of this region over a period of time. Most of them include trips on houseboats for its guests as a part of their additional facilities. Tourists booking an accommodation in them can get to explore these magical waters in an elegantly crafted houseboat. They can not only enjoy the wonderful views along the backwaters, but also get to taste delicious cuisines that are freshly prepared on board. Stays in these hotels are also made pleasant and memorable with modern facilities and excellent amenities. To avoid last-minute hassles, it is advisable to book accommodations in hotels or resorts well in advance.
