(AP) ? Former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and a hotel maid who accused him of trying to rape her have reached an agreement to settle her lawsuit, likely ending a legal saga that forced the onetime French presidential contender's resignation and opened a floodgate of accusations against him, a person familiar with the case said Thursday.

Details of the deal, which comes after prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last year, weren't immediately known and likely will be veiled by a confidentiality agreement. That could prevent the two from speaking publicly about a May 2011 encounter that she called a brutally sudden attack and he termed a consensual "moral failing."

Lawyers for Strauss-Kahn and the housekeeper, Nafissatou Diallo, made the as-yet-unsigned agreement within recent days, with Bronx Supreme Court Justice Douglas McKeon facilitating that and a separate agreement to end another lawsuit Diallo filed against the New York Post, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private agreement. A court date is expected next week, though the day wasn't set, the person said.

Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor III declined to comment. Lawyers for the housekeeper didn't immediately respond to phone and email messages.

Diallo, 33, and Strauss-Kahn, 63, crossed paths when she arrived to clean his luxury Manhattan hotel suite. She told police he chased her down, tried to yank down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex.

The allegation seemed to let loose a spiral of accusations about the sexual conduct of Strauss-Kahn, a married diplomat and economist who had long been dubbed the "great seducer." He now faces charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring in his home country.

With DNA evidence showing a sexual encounter and Diallo providing a gripping description of an attack, the Manhattan district attorney's office initially said it had a strong and compelling case. But within six weeks, prosecutors' confidence began to ebb as they said Diallo had lied about her past ? including a false account of a previous rape ? and her actions after leaving Strauss-Kahn's room.

Diallo, who's from Guinea, said she told the truth about their encounter. But the district attorney's office dropped the charges in August 2011, saying prosecutors could no longer ask a jury to believe her.

Diallo had sued Strauss-Kahn in the meantime, with her lawyers saying she would get her day in a different court. Strauss-Kahn called the lawsuit defamatory and countersued her for $1 million.

Her lawsuit against the Post concerned a series of articles that called her a prostitute and said she sold sex at a hotel where the Manhattan DA's office had housed her during the criminal case. The News Corp. newspaper has said it stands by its reporting; a spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday.

In helping resolve the cases, McKeon averted what could have been an ugly court drama.

Strauss-Kahn initially said he had diplomatic immunity, an argument the judge turned down in May. Strauss-Kahn's lawyers had since asked McKeon to throw out part of her claim for other legal reasons. Court records show the judge had yet to rule on that and several other legal issues, and it appeared that a high-stakes step ? depositions, or pretrial questioning under oath ? had not yet been taken. Depositions can give both sides information and a better picture of how strong the key parties and other witnesses might be in court.

While the vast majority of civil cases end in settlements, some legal observers were surprised that the deal between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo came before the legal arguments were resolved.

"I really expected it to go a little farther," said Matthew Galluzzo, a criminal defense lawyer and civil litigator who has been following the Strauss-Kahn case closely.

Still, the case likely had taken a toll on both Diallo, a single mother of a teenage daughter, and Strauss-Kahn, who has found himself plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct that further tarnished his reputation. The Socialist had been seen as a potential leading candidate for the French presidency before his New York arrest.

In France, judges are to decide by Dec. 19 whether to annul charges linking him to a suspected prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in Lille. He acknowledges attending "libertine" gatherings but denies knowing that some women present were paid.

In August, a separate case against Strauss-Kahn, centered on allegations of rape in a Washington, D.C., hotel, was dropped after French prosecutors said the accuser, an escort, changed her account to say she wasn't raped.

Soon after Strauss-Kahn's arrest in New York last year, French writer Tristane Banon accused him of attempting to rape her during an interview in 2003, a claim he called imaginary and slanderous. Prosecutors said they believed the encounter qualified as a sexual assault, but the legal timeframe to pursue her complaint had elapsed.

The Associated Press does not name people who report being sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Diallo and Banon have done.

Strauss-Kahn has separated from his wife, journalist and heiress Anne Sinclair, who stood by him through the allegations in New York. The two said they were filing a lawsuit this summer against a French magazine, citing invasion of privacy, for reporting they had split, but Sinclair later acknowledged it was true.

The New York Times first reported the agreement between Strauss-Kahn and Diallo.

A great dessert shake with chocolate liqueur, vodka and vanilla ice ...

I love making cocktails for my Classic Cocktail series; discovering the history of a cocktail and putting together fresh and stellar ingredients to make a great reproduction of a well known cocktail brings together so many elements of my personality. Curiousity, a bit of tenacity and of course the sheer joy delivered from the creativity of a cocktail in the making. So?why have I forsaken those old standards for a plethora of seasonal spirits often marked with something less than the elegance they bring to the party? Simple?for FUN! Something about the season from Halloween through New Year?s inspires cocktails that are more emblematic of the party spirit.

In the past several weeks, apple cider and caramel vodka made for a great libation in the spirit of either Fall or Halloween; pumpkin mixed with rum and a brown sugar simple syrup conjured up a pumpkin pie so reminiscent of the fall holiday season and now this?a? cocktail I can imagine being sipped while sitting around the holiday tree; maybe singing Christmas Carols or simply enjoying a sweet libation after a nice meal ? this is most definitely what I would consider a dessert cocktail. Sweet yes, but with the bite of vodka and I loved the texture of my favorite sugar crystals rimming the luscious combination.

I?ve been asked to sample more liqueurs and spirits than I can keep up with but the truth is I?m not interested in many that are offered. Many sound fun but are pretty all inclusive, not requiring that I bring anything to the mix but ice and that would soon be a boring effort. This is not a review site; I love the craft of considering the different elements of alcoholic beverages and delicious liqueurs. I knew as soon as I was asked about my interest in the Crave Chocolate Mint Liqueur that I would have to make something for the winter holidays?the weather outside might be frightful but something about mint brings just a bit of warmth to the mix?and adding vodka doesn?t hurt either!

I thought it only appropriate that I actually taste this liqueur straight?did you hear me yell, ?Help, somebody STOP me!?? While I can appreciate a great vermouth or the nuances of bitters in a cocktail, sometimes there is just a yum factor that can?t be denied and this liqueur definitely has that. Mocha and Semi Sweet Chocolate swirl on the tongue; with the sweet mint offering a nice cooling sensation. A very light mouth feel?something I find most welcome for an after dinner liqueur. Super yum (what, not sophisticated enough?sorry, it?s been a very long day). There are also Crave liqueurs in Chocolate Cherry and Chocolate Chili?I should have asked for some of those too huh? Now I?m dying to try them! Chocolate CHILI!! Oh yes.

I will often invite my family or neighbors over to ?assist? with the results and their feedback is always helpful. This time I made two cocktails that I was going to be forced to drink myself (OH NO!!) when my daughter dropped by. She can attest to how delightful this was?no matter how frightful the weather!

The Crave Liqueur would be great alone over ice but this was special. Try it. You?ll like it.

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. AMSC slashes 25 percent of workforce, cuts third-quarter outlook

(Reuters) - Power technology company AMSC said it laid off about a quarter of its workforce due to "challenging conditions" in the wind power market.

The company also cut its loss outlook for the current quarter ending December to less than 31 cents per share, excluding items. It had earlier forecast a loss of less than 26 cents.

The maker of electrical components for wind turbines said it has about 340 employees after the workforce reduction.

AMSC has been struggling to return to a profit after losing major customer Sinovel Wind Group in 2011, but a weak global economy and industry overcapacity have kept progress at bay.

Devens, Massachusetts-based AMSC's shares fell 11 percent to $2.47 in early trading on the Nasdaq. They have lost more than 80 percent of their value since Chinese wind turbine maker Sinovel refused to accept shipments in April 2011.

AMSC's revenue from the wind turbine business fell more than 10 percent in the quarter ended September.

"Financing and cash flow among wind farm developers and wind turbine manufacturers have been constrained, which has impacted growth plans for some of our partners," Chief Executive Daniel McGahn said in a statement.

AMSC said it expects to incur restructuring charges of between $3 million and $4 million related to the job cuts over the next two quarters, $2 million of which will be taken in the current quarter.

The company also expects savings of about $10 million from the restructuring, fully realized in the quarter ending June 2013.

Installed price of solar photovoltaic systems in US continues to decline at rapid pace

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? The installed price of solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems in the United States fell substantially in 2011 and through the first half of 2012, according to the latest edition of Tracking the Sun, an annual PV cost-tracking report produced by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

The median installed price of residential and commercial PV systems completed in 2011 fell by roughly 11 to 14 percent from the year before, depending on system size, and, in California, prices fell by an additional 3 to 7 percent within the first six months of 2012. These recent installed price reductions are attributable, in large part, to dramatic reductions in PV module prices, which have been falling precipitously since 2008.

The report indicates that non-module costs -- such as installation labor, marketing, overhead, inverters, and the balance of systems -- have also fallen significantly over time. "The drop in non-module costs is especially important," notes report co-author Ryan Wiser of Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, "as these costs can be most readily influenced by local, state, and national policies aimed at accelerating deployment and removing market barriers." According to the report, average non-module costs for residential and commercial systems declined by roughly 30 percent from 1998 to 2011, but have not declined as rapidly as module prices in recent years. As a result, non-module costs now represent a sizable fraction of the installed price of PV systems, and continued deep reduction in the price of PV will require concerted emphasis on lowering the portion of non-module costs associated with so-called "business process" or "soft" costs.

The report indicates that the median installed price of PV systems installed in 2011 was $6.10 per watt (W) for residential and small commercial systems smaller than 10 kilowatts (kW) in size and was $4.90/W for larger commercial systems of 100 kW or more in size. Utility-sector PV systems larger than 2,000 kW in size averaged $3.40/W in 2011. Report co-author Galen Barbose, also of Berkeley Lab, stresses the importance of keeping these numbers in context, noting that "these data provide a reliable benchmark for systems installed in the recent past, but prices have continued to decline over time, and PV systems being sold today are being offered at lower prices."

Based on these data and on installed price data from other major international PV markets, the authors suggest that PV prices in the United States may be driven lower through large-scale deployment programs, but that other factors are also important in achieving installed price reductions.

The market for solar PV systems in the United States has grown rapidly over the past decade, as national, state and local governments offered various incentives to expand the solar market and accelerate cost reductions. This fifth edition in Berkeley Lab's Tracking the Sun reportseries describes historical trends in the installed price of PV in the United States, and examines more than 150,000 residential, commercial, and utility-sector PV systems installed between 1998 and 2011 across 27 states, representing roughly 76 percent of all grid-connected PV capacity installed in the United States. Na?m Darghouth, also with Berkeley Lab, explains that "the study is intended to provide policy makers and industry observers with a reliable and detailed set of historical benchmarks for tracking and understanding past trends in the installed price of PV."

Prices Differ by Region and by Size and Type of System

The study also highlights the significant variability in PV system pricing, some of which is associated with differences in installed prices by region and by system size and installation type. Comparing across U.S. states, for example, the median installed price of PV systems less than 10 kW in size that were completed in 2011 and ranged from $4.90/W to $7.60/W, depending on the state.

It also shows that PV installed prices exhibit significant economies of scale. Among systems installed in 2011, the median price for systems smaller than 2 kW was $7.70/W, while the median price for large commercial systems greater than 1,000 kW in size was $4.50/W. Utility-scale systems installed in 2011 registered even lower prices, with most systems larger than 10,000 kW ranging from $2.80/W to $3.50/W.

The report also finds that the installed price of residential PV systems on new homes has generally been significantly lower than the price of similarly sized systems installed as retrofits to existing homes, that building integrated PV systems have generally been higher priced than rack-mounted systems, and that systems installed on tax-exempt customer sites have generally been priced higher than those installed at residential and for-profit commercial customer sites.

Price Declines for PV System Owners in 2011 Were Offset by Falling Incentives

State agencies and utilities in many regions offer rebates or other forms of cash incentives for residential and commercial PV systems. According to the report, the median pre-tax value of such cash incentives ranged from $0.90/W to $1.20/W for systems installed in 2011, depending on system size. These incentives have declined significantly over time, falling by roughly 80 percent over the past decade, and by 21 percent to 43 percent from just 2010 to 2011. Rather than a direct cash incentive, some states with renewables portfolio standards provide financial incentives for solar PV by creating a market for solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs), and SREC prices have also fallen dramatically in recent years. These declines in cash incentives and SREC prices have, to a significant degree, offset recent installed price reductions, dampening any overall improvement in the customer economics of solar PV.

Sea level rose 60 percent faster than UN projections, study finds

A recent study published in the journal "Nature" suggests the U.S. may experience a 5-foot rise in sea level given all of the fossil fuel that has already been burned. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Projections for sea level rise in coming decades could be too conservative, experts warned Wednesday, saying they found that the rise over the last two decades is much more than predicted by the U.N. scientific body tracking climate signals.

In a peer-reviewed study, the experts said satellite data show sea levels rose by 3.2?millimeters?(0.1 inch) a year from 1993 to 2011 ??60 percent faster than the 2 mm annual rise projected by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for that period.?

"This suggests that IPCC sea-level projections for the future may also be biased low," the team wrote in the journal Environmental Research Letters.?

The experts also said the IPCC was just about spot on with its predictions for warming temperatures.

"Global warming has not slowed down or is lagging behind the projections," lead author Stefan Rahmstorf, a researcher at Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, said in a statement. "The IPCC is far from being alarmist and in fact in some cases rather underestimates possible risks."?

The experts added that the faster sea level rise is unlikely to be caused by a temporary ice discharge from Greenland or Antarctica ice sheets because it correlates very well with the increase in global temperature.

The IPCC earlier estimated that seas rose by about 7 inches over the last century, and its most recent report, published in 2007, estimated a range of between?7 and 23 inches this century ? enough to worsen coastal flooding and erosion during storm surges.

But the IPCC report did not factor in a possible acceleration of the melt of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

The IPCC "assumed that Antarctica will gain enough (ice) mass" to compensate for Greenland ice loss, the new?study's authors noted, but?more recent studies have shown that "the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are increasingly losing mass."

Related: Ice melt found across 97 percent of Greenland

Rahmstorf told Reuters his best estimate for sea level rise was between 20 inches and three feet this century, possibly more if greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide surged.

In the past century, as the climate has warmed, sea level rise has accelerated. Scientists predict it will only increase, and they're studying changes in the ocean and land to better understand how and why the water is rising. NBC's Anne Thompson reports for "Changing Planet," produced by NBC Learn in partnership with the National Science Foundation.

The IPCC chair, addressing delegates to international climate talks being held in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday made note of the recent findings on ice loss and sea level rise.

The next IPCC report, Rajendra Pachauri?promised, will have "a better appreciation of mass loss of the large ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica."

When the next IPCC report comes out in March 2014, he added, expect "a?more quantitative understanding?of ongoing sea level rise" ? and an entire chapter on the topic.

This tangy bean salad is coated with a smoky chili powder vinaigrette, chopped fresh cilantro leaves stirred in at serving time and topped with cubed jalapeno jack cheese. Optional additional heat comes from Chipotle Tabasco Sauce or your favorite hot sauce.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a helicopter base just outside Damascus Sunday in what an activist called a "blow to the morale of the regime" near President Bashar Assad's seat of power, while the bombardment of a village near the capital killed at least eight children.

Activists said the children were killed when Syrian warplanes bombed the village of Deir al-Asafir just outside the Damascus. The village is close to suburbs of the capital that has been witnessing clashes, shelling and air raids between troops and rebels over the past months.

The Britain-based Syrian observatory for Human Rights said the bombardment of the village killed eight children. Another activist group, the Revolution Command Council said 10 children were killed when warplanes struck the village as they played outdoors.

An amateur video showed two girls lying dead in a street while the bodies of two bloodied dead boys were in the back seat of a car parked nearby. Several other wounded children were seen rushed for treatment.

Another video showed the bodies of two dead boys inside what appeared to be a makeshift hospital as others received treatment from injuries while lying on the floor.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists. Hundreds of children have been killed since the crisis began, according to activists.

The air base takeover claim showed how rebels are advancing in the area of the capital, though they are badly outgunned, making inroads where Assad's power was once unchallenged. Rebels have also been able to fire mortar rounds into Damascus recently.

The director of the Observatory, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning. He said at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier. The rebels later withdrew from the base.

Rebels appear to be trying to take over air bases and destroy aircraft in order to prevent the regime from using them in attacks against opposition forces around the country.

The rebels have no protection against the attack helicopters and fighter jets that have been blasting their positions.

Rebels have been attacking air bases in different parts of Syria, mostly in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo.

In the battle at the base outside Damascus, Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base, which is on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, houses several radar positions.

"This is a blow to the morale of the regime, because it is close to the heart of the capital," said Abdul-Rahman, referring to the base that is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Damascus.

Al-Shami said the rebels withdrew from the base after they captured some ammunition. He said they feared counterstrikes by regime aircraft.

An amateur video posted online showed rebels walking next to two destroyed helicopters. At least three other helicopters appeared undamaged. Black smoke billowed in the distance.

Another video showed several radar posts on hills inside the large compound. Parked military trucks stood inside as rebels roamed freely.

The Observatory also reported violence in other parts of Syria, including the country's largest city of Aleppo in the north and the capital itself.

It said rebels on Sunday captured a training base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command near the Damascus suburb of Douma. The PFLP-GC is one of the Palestinian factions most loyal to Assad.

The PFLP-GC said in a statement late Saturday that the base was under attack. It said that thousands of activists and fighters who fought against Israel were trained at the base over the past 30 years.

Also Sunday, the Observatory said a bomb targeted a bus in the southern village of Othman, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. It said rebels and troops clashed in the southern region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said residents found 12 bodies in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, scene of heavy clashes between rebels and government troops over the past few days.

State TV said troops clashed with al-Qaida militants in Daraya, killing some of them and confiscating a mortar that they were using in their attacks.

The station said that troops killed an al-Qaida affiliated Palestinian militant known as Abu Suhaib in the Damascus suburb of Hajira. It said his group was behind several bombings in Syria that killed and wounded dozens of people.

Assad's regime blames the revolt on a foreign conspiracy. It accuses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the United States, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom it calls terrorists.

Cyber Monday likely to be busiest online sales day

(AP) ? Black Friday is a distant memory. Small Business Saturday is long gone. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed a spike in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving when people returned to their work computers, is the next in a line of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

This year's Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up from $1.25 billion last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers ramp up deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55-inch TV that's usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99.

Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. Sexton, who plans to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals.

"The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping," said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company.

Sexton also said it's easy to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. "That helps with gifts," he said.

How well retailers do on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans' evolving shopping habits. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide and increasing use of smartphones and tablet computers, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, coined the term "Cyber Monday."

As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has have become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, IBM Benchmark, which tracks online sales, said on Thanksgiving, a day that historically had not been big for online shopping, online sales this year rose 17.4 percent over 2011. Of that, mobile shopping, or shopping on smartphones and tablets, rose 18.3 percent. Meanwhile, online sales on Black Friday were up 20.7 percent.

For the overall holiday season, comScore predicts online sales will be up 17 percent to $43.4 billion. And the research firm expects online sales to surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion

"People years ago didn't have the kind of connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they'd shop on the Monday after," said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. "Now they don't need the work computer to be able to do that."

But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn't always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically held on the last day shoppers can order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day usually falls in late December.

Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking.

"Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years," said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

Inheritance Cycle Roleplay?

I almost never come here anymore, but I was just curious. Would any of you Gateway dwellers be remotely interested in a roleplay set inside the world of Alagasea, aka the world of Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and inheritance? I dunno why, but recently I've been wanting to an rp within this world, following its rules and stuff like that. Would anyone be interested?

Halo: The SPARTAN V Project!

Welcome to the SPARTAN V Project!

The SPARTAN V project is a new and secret development within the UNSC to increase the already sensational performance of the SPARTAN super soldiers. With the addition of a new, and rare material known as Orichalcum, the SPARTAN V Project has focused on using this near indestructible material to further augment both the SPARTAN skeletal structure, and their armor to make them that much tougher and that much stronger. Also, now that the war with the Covenant is over and there are no wars to thin the ranks, over fifteen hundred SPARTANs have successfully integrated into the program which has been a godsend for the UNSC.

With the expansion of the human race to yet more previously undiscovered planets, colonization has skyrocketed in recent decades. One such example is the planet Bacchius Prime, a planet only eight light years away from planet Reach. Due to the battles against the Covenant, this planet went largely unnoticed until recent years when it was discovered along the path of a colonial ship searching for new worlds to begin colonization on. After the planet was briefly explored, it was found to have a near identical atmosphere to Reach, and thus was safe for human habitation. Over the course of the last ten years or so, the colonization on Bacchius Prime has gone without incident. However, in the more recent months, there have been numerous people disappearing from the colony, as well as several maulings just outside the colony's walls. The cause of these disappearances and deaths remains unknown, but they have increased in number quite drastically since the first incident. This prompted the colony to reach out to the UNSC and ask for a SPARTAN deployment, as several ODST squads were deployed to the planet but also disappeared.

In response, the UNSC sent twenty five SPARTANs to the planet, but five among them stood out from the rest. As you very well may have guessed, these were all SPARTAN V soldiers. With a more sleek and smooth armor design, as well as a rather impressive military record despite the brief time they've been on deployment, the SPARTAN V presence was immediately identified by the colony, but when these five SPARTANs disappeared as well, only the UNSC and the other SPARTANs who were left didn't seem worried. The colony has since begun to calm down, given that the number of disappearances and deaths has dropped off significantly, but it remains a mystery as to what's causing them in the first place. Since the SPARTAN V's have not shown their faces since their arrival, nobody even knows if they're still around or still alive.

Well this is where you come in!

There are three SPARTAN V slots left to be filled, and I have a possible third already being worked on so be quick if this idea strikes your fancy! Once the SPARTAN V slots are filled, they are filled, and no further SPARTAN V's will be added. Once the SPARTAN V slots are filled, and if you still wish to join the RP, then you can send me a pm and we can discuss what you can be and how to integrate you into the story.

Now please be aware: while I am taking some creative license in creating the SPARTAN V characters, I am staying as true to the original content of Halo as possible. I am not going to be allowing anyone, even the SPARTAN V's, to act like gods and walk away from battle unscathed. While the Orichalcum armor will deflect most energy based projectiles, explosives and other more specialized weapons can still damage it and cause injury to the SPARTANs. All the characters will succumb to injuries throughout the RP and be forced to take time out from missions to recover, though the recovery time is very brief thanks to the amazing medical team the SPARTAN V's have on standby.

So! If this RP sounds like it'd be fun for you, then drop by but please, PLEASE... read the information above the character skeleton before you just randomly submit a character profile. I HATE it when I just find a profile waiting for me without any sort of warning that you're interested. So please, read all the necessary information, post the profile to the OOC thread "Character Profiles", and send a greeting our way cause it makes for a good first impression. Also, do NOT submit a character for approval before I have checked it in the OOC. If you submit to the OOC, and then submit to the RP directly without my approval in the OOC before hand, the profile will be rejected.

Thank you!

Norway killer slams prison conditions

(AP) ? Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik says prison officers are trying to drive him to suicide in conditions he describes as "a mini Abu Ghraib," with strict security regimes and unpredictable guards.

In a 27-page letter to prison officials obtained by the AP, Breivik writes he is frustrated that guards do not cooperate with his carefully planned daily schedule and that they serve him cold coffee. The 33-year-old rightwing fanatic also alleges he is denied a reading lamp, has restricted access to candy and is given daily strip searches.

Breivik killed 77 people in a car bombing and shooting attacks in Norway's worst peacetime massacre. He was sentenced to 21 years, which may be extended as long as he is considered a danger to society.
