There are many different schools offering x ray technician training. However, it is of utmost importance to opt for a school that has been accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians (ARRT). Accreditation of a school simply means that their training program meets the standards required of a good training program. To find out whether a x ray technician school has been accredited or not, you can look up this information up on the ARRT official website.

Any x ray technician training program will include theoretical and practical training. The theoretical training will include courses in human anatomy, pathology, physiology, medical ethics, radiology, radiation, radiation protection, medical imaging and patient care. Practical training is done through clinicals at medical facilities.

X ray technician schools are either campus based or online. There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods of learning. A major disadvantage of online x ray technician training programs is that a student does not get the opportunity to get practical or hands on training. However, this disadvantage can be overcome by carrying out an internship at a hospital or other medical facility.

After completing a training program, a person can take the ARRT licensing exams. While this is not mandatory, it is advisable to sit and pass these exams in order to get certification as most employers will prefer a licensed x ray tech. Re-certification exams should also be taken every 24 months.
Some x ray technician schools include Argosy University, South University online, Keiser University and Grand Canyon University which offer online programs. Campus based programs are offered at Lincoln Technical University and Colorado Technical University.
