This Crazy Baggage Roller Coaster Takes Your Bags For a Record-Breaking Ride [Video]

For the most part, traditional conveyor-based baggage-delivery systems work just fine, but they are pretty slow, which can throttle your throughput. That's suddenly not a problem if you treat your bags to a kart-based roller coaster that reaches speeds up to 22mph (600 meters per minute). Airplanes won't be the only things that are flying, figuratively anyway. More »

Attack kills 2 Americans, at least 2 Afghans

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and at least two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened.

An Afghan official speaking on condition of anonymity said three Afghan soldiers were killed in the clash. It was not clear if the assailant was among the dead.

The attack happened about 5 p.m. in Sayd Abad district, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said in an emailed statement. He did not provide further details, saying he would wait for a report from investigators.

NATO forces announced the assault early Sunday morning, saying only that it was "suspected insider attack" and that a NATO service member and civilian contractor were killed.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for preparing the Afghans to take the lead in security operations as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The number of American military dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.

The five most important things to know about pancreatic cancer

BETHPAGE, N.Y., Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The first anniversary of the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on October 5 reminds us of the importance and need for research in the fight against pancreatic cancer, the most lethal of all cancers. The Lustgarten Foundation, America's largest private foundation dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research, today presents the top five things to know about pancreatic cancer:

1. It's a Silent Disease - Pancreatic cancer is often labeled a silent disease because many times the signs and symptoms can go unnoticed until the cancer is in the advanced stage. Even when there are early signs and symptoms, they may be vague and easily attributed to another disease. For example, potential symptoms may include fatigue, back pain, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, jaundice, nausea and inflammation of the pancreas.

2. It's the Fourth-Leading Cause of Cancer Deaths - In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. More than 37,000* people will die from the disease this year alone. Of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, just six percent survive five years and most with advanced cancer die within a year.

3. There are Different Types of Pancreatic Cancer - Although the most common type of pancreatic cancer is an adenocarcinoma tumor, which spreads quickly, some people - such as in the case of Steve Jobs - are diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, a neuroendocrine tumor, which is slower growing.

4. More Research is Needed for Pancreatic Cancer - The disease's grim statistics underscore the importance of research in order to find a cure. Since it was founded in 1998, The Lustgarten Foundation has played an important role in the evolution of the field of pancreatic cancer research, devoting more than $42 million to more than 125 research projects at more than 40 medical and research centers worldwide.

5. With Research, There Is Hope - While there have been significant scientific discoveries in our understanding of the disease, much more needs to be done. Research offers hope for an early detection test, more effective long-term treatments and - ultimately - a cure. And, 100 percent of every dollar raised by The Lustgarten Foundation goes directly to research due to Cablevision's support of the Foundation.

For more information on The Lustgarten Foundation and pancreatic cancer, please visit www.curePC.org. The Lustgarten Foundation is also available to serve as a resource for stories about the disease and advancements in the field of pancreatic cancer research.

Intel To Kick Off Mobile Push with Windows 8 Tablets and Hybrid Devices

Chip maker Intel hopes to get into mobile devices in a big way Thursday as the company unveils the 1.8GHz dual-core Atom Z2760, the first chip from Intel's Clover Trail family. The new chip is designed specifically for Windows 8 tablets and hybrid devices as the company tries to compete with ARM-based chips that currently dominate the smartphone and tablet world.

Intel says Clover Trail boasts a number of key updates to its Atom platform: longer battery life; smaller die packaging (allowing for thinner and lighter devices); hardware acceleration for displaying higher-definition images; and 4G LTE network support. The new chip will be officially unveiled during a special Windows 8-themed event in San Francisco Thursday with numerous major PC manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and ZTE (check back later for PCWorld's event coverage).

What Will Battery Life Be Like Under Clover Trail?

The first big claim Intel is making for the 1.8GHz Atom Z2760 is that it can provide up to 10 hours of battery life for local (non-Web based) high-definition video playback, and up to three weeks of standby time. Intel's previous Atom chips were often criticized for offering poor battery life performance, which is one reason why ARM-based chips have been the preferred choice for mobile device manufacturers.

For Clover Trail, Intel has focused on improving power management, but it's too early to tell just how good it will be in the new platform. Nonetheless, if Intel wants to compete in a mobile market where battery life is critical, it will have to nail down power efficiency to have any chance of relevancy.

Clover Trail's Other Features

The new chip will also include NFC support, the ability to support mobile device cameras with a maximum 8-megapixel sensor, and integrated graphics with hardware acceleration support for 1080p video. The Z2760 can also support an internal and external display at the same time, and supports Internet connections over Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G LTE networks.

Intel is also saying the new Atom chip can allow manufacturers to create devices that are as thin as 0.33 inches and as light as 1.5 pounds. That's a little bit thinner and heavier than what Apple offers with its Wi-fi/Cellular iPad that features a depth of 0.37-inches and a weight around 1.46 pounds.

Intel vs Arm on Windows

For the new Windows 8 ecosystem, there will actually be two flavors of the OS to choose from: Windows 8 and Windows RT. Windows 8 will appear in any device running an x86-based processor. Windows RT, meanwhile, is the OS version for ARM-based tablets that rely on the new touch-friendly Windows 8 UI (formerly known as Metro). Windows RT will still include a traditional desktop interface option, but it will be buried in the OS, and it won't be able to run legacy third-party apps such as Photoshop or browsers like Mozilla Firefox. To alleviate this pain point, Microsoft says Windows RT will offer a free version of Office as well as Internet Explorer for accessing the Web.

As for Windows 8 tablets running on Intel silicon, they'll theoretically offer full compatibility with Windows legacy technology, including current desktop applications, and peripherals such as printers and cameras. These could be handy advantages if you want them, but it's not clear if people are clamoring to use Quicken on a tiny touchscreen, or print directly from their tablets.

Clover Trail Hardware Options

Intel's event will include presentations from major PC manufacturers so we should get more details later. But the company in June said 20 Windows 8 tablets with Clover Trail chips were already in the works. Some tablets and laptop convertibles set to run Clover Trail chips have already been announced including the Hewlett-Packard Envy X2, Samsung Ativ Smart PC, and Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2.

Clover Trail Device Pricing

The key to a successful push into mobile devices will be the cost of Clover Trail-powered Windows 8 laptops and hybrids. Few prices have been announced for upcoming Clover Trail devices, but costs are expected to range anywhere from $700 to $1000 and up. That's definitely more expensive than the $500 price tag of a base model iPad. But Intel-powered tablets should offer more PC-like capabilities than Apple's tablet, and this should appeal to anyone looking to get real work done on a touchscreen device.

Advice That You Can Use When Buying A Home | Eric Chua : Life ...

There never existed a better time in our economy to buy real estate. This is a very profitable market and comes with lower rates and a lower investment to begin with. The advice provided in this article will assist you in finding a property that is both affordable and profitable.

When you are buying a property, have some extra money so that you can pay for costs that you did not expect. Buyers will often calculate the final closing costs by combining the amount for the down payment, any points that go to the bank, as well as any prorated taxes for real estate. You have to keep in mind that the closing costs might include other items like school taxes or improvement bonds.

Ask for closing cost assistance from the seller to save yourself some up front expenses. For example, you could ask for a seller to buy down your interest rates for a limited period of time. Keep in mind, though, if you request financial incentives from the seller, he will probably be less willing to negotiate on the home?s selling price.

TIP! Keeping an approval letter with you will make you much more attractive to your sellers. If you wait to get an approval, it will lengthen the amount of time it takes to buy the home, which could cost you more in the end.

Assume that needed repairs are a given when you are considering purchased any foreclosed home. Many of the foreclosed homes that are on the market have been vacant for quite some time. Regular maintenance has more than likely not been done on the home, which means significant repairs should be expected. Foreclosed homes often will require HVAC systems installed, and may be infested with pests.

If you get any home you are looking to buy appraised, accept an appraiser with no less than five years of experience. Don?t hire appraisers recommended by real estate agents. There is possibly a pretty stern conflict of interest. The appraiser that you hire must be state-certified or state-licensed.

TIP! When negotiating with a seller, make a reasonable offer. A lot of people adopt an aggressive attitude in the hope that the other party will cave.

Always obtain home warranty protection. It doesn?t matter whether you are buying a new home from the person who builds it or from a previous owner. You should still ask them for a home warranty. Any quality builder will stand behind the home he or she has built for a certain period of time. Prior owners of your newly-purchased home should have no problem providing a home warranty of some duration as a way of compensating you for repairs that may need to be made.

When you are plunging into real estate, make sure you have clear goals in mind. Categorize your long-term and short-term goals. If the investment doesn?t match the goals you have in place, don?t bother with it. If you don?t consider your own needs before investing, you?re likely to lose money on the deal or get frustrated with your investment.

Be pre-qualified for a mortgage loans before looking at houses. You don?t want to end up coming across the house of your dreams to be told that you can?t get a large enough loan to buy it. Also, getting a loan can be a long process that you do not want to wait until last minute to begin.

TIP! When purchasing a foreclosed home, it is wise to assume that there will be repairs that will need to be made. Most foreclosed properties are in need of repair, because they have not been maintained for a very long time.

If you are interested in a home with a beautiful view, don?t pay that much more because of the viewing possibilities. Even though you might appreciate the view, in the long term, potential buyers may not. Therefore, you can buy the house with the view, just make sure you don?t overpay for it.

Get a professional to look at the building you want to buy. It will cost a bit of money, but do not have a friend or relative inspect the home, because should they miss something, there is nothing you can do.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. The key is to purchase the property and hold until the time is right before you make your big

TIP! If you?re thinking about relocating, you may want to consider looking online at the neighborhood of the house you?re thinking of purchasing. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet, even for small cities and towns.

Obama, Netanyahu seek to get past Iran differences

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a show of unity on Friday on preventing a nuclear-armed Iran, seeking to tone down the acrimony between the two leaders that has become an issue in the final stretch of the U.S. presidential race.

Obama, widely seen as having snubbed Netanyahu by not meeting face to face with him during his U.S. visit, spoke instead by phone to the Israeli prime minister amid signs of movement toward a truce in their war of words over how to confront Tehran.

Netanyahu used his U.N. speech a day earlier to keep pressure on Washington to set a "red line" for Tehran, something Obama has refused to do. But in a softening of his approach, the hawkish Israeli premier signaled that no attack on Iran was imminent before the November 6 U.S. presidential election.

With an eye to the close presidential contest, Netanyahu also fielded a call during his New York visit from Obama's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, who has accused the president of being too hard on a close ally and not tough enough on Iran.

Romney has sought to use Obama's differences with Netanyahu to raise doubts with Jewish-American voters about Obama's commitment to Israel's security.

Obama's aides believe, however, that he has played his cards right with Netanyahu, with whom the president has had a notoriously testy relationship.

Netanyahu's strident complaints about U.S. policy on Iran in mid-September plunged U.S.-Israeli relations into crisis, but also spurred a backlash at home and in the U.S. media for seeming to meddle in American politics.

In recent days, the Israelis have sought to dial down the rhetoric, culminating in Netanyahu's speech to the General Assembly, which was seen as sending a message that Israel would not blindside Washington with a unilateral attack on Iran any time soon.

"The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the White House said in a summary of their 20-minute phone conversation.

The White House said the two agreed to continue their cooperation, but it stopped short of saying Obama had given any ground on his resistance to issuing an ultimatum to Tehran, as Netanyahu has repeatedly demanded.

"I had a very good conversation with President Obama," Netanyahu told Israel television. "Our teams are talking."

An Obama aide went further, saying, "The temperature is lower than it had been."

TONING DOWN DIFFERENCES

Netanyahu dramatically ramped up pressure on Obama earlier this month when he insisted the United States did not have a "moral right" to hold Israel back from taking action against Iran because Washington had not set its own limits on Tehran.

That was followed by word that Obama would not meet Netanyahu during the Israeli leader's visit to address the United Nations. Obama later said pointedly that he would ignore the "noise that's out there" on the Iran issue.

Obama's aides were furious that Netanyahu was trying to put pressure on the president in the midst of the election campaign and refused to budge on the red-line issue, despite the risk of alienating pro-Israel voters in election battleground states like Florida and Ohio.

At the same time, Israeli officials - mindful of the danger of antagonizing the Jewish state's main ally and of poisoning relations with the man who could occupy the White House for another four years - moved into damage-control mode.

Michael Oren, Israeli ambassador to the United States, flew back to Jerusalem last weekend, during which he urged Netanyahu to tone down public statements that could be construed as interfering in the U.S. election or supporting Romney, according to sources in the Jewish community in Washington.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited Chicago and met privately on September 20 with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former close Obama aide, raising speculation that Emanuel might be used as a back-channel conduit to mend ties with the president.

The Israeli desire to defuse the crisis may also have reflected an interpretation of recent U.S. opinion polls showing a widening of Obama's lead over Romney, who has suffered a series of political stumbles.

Romney, speaking to reporters on his campaign plane, said he and Netanyahu agreed Iran must be denied nuclear capabilities but did not agree on specific "red lines" to confront Tehran.

"I do not believe in the final analysis we will have to use military action," Romney said. "I certainly hope we don't have to. I can't take that action off the table."

In his U.N. speech, Netanyahu held up a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb with a fuse and literally drew a red line just below a label reading "final stage," in which Iran would supposedly be 90 percent along the path to having weapons-grade material.

Nevertheless, his warning that Iran would be on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon in less than a year was widely interpreted as some giving breathing space to Obama, who has urged more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work.

By referring to a spring or summer 2013 time frame for Iran to complete the next stage of uranium enrichment, the Israeli leader seemed to dispel fears that Israel might strike Iran before the U.S. election.

Iran denies it is seeking to build nuclear weaponry.

Netanyahu's praise for Obama's stern words for Iran in his own U.N. speech on Tuesday - although it lacked any specific ultimatum - was also seen as a sign that the Israeli leader wanted to quell the unusually public dispute with Washington.

"I think we are moving in a direction where the differences that were there, which were always tactical and not strategic, are in fact being managed at this point," Dennis Ross, Obama's former Middle East adviser, told MSNBC.

Still, White House officials were pleased at avoiding an encounter with Netanyahu, who used an Oval Office meeting in 2011 to lecture Obama on Jewish history. Obama instead kept a lower-than-usual profile at this year's U.N. gathering, making a campaign-style appearance on the popular talk show "The View" and then quickly returning to electioneering.

(AP) ? The question used to come up every other year when the Americans began looking ahead to the Ryder Cup.

"Who's their Peter Baker?"

Europe always had at least one player the Americans didn't know anything about until losing to him. Baker played in only one Ryder Cup, going 3-1 in 1993 and winning a singles match against Corey Pavin, one of the toughest guys to beat in match play.

Those days are gone. As golf has expanded its borders, the Ryder Cup no longer has any mystery guests.

Eight of the Europeans have joint membership on the PGA Tour, and all eight have homes in Florida. Luke Donald of England, who has the best winning percentage of anyone at Medinah, lives about 45 minutes away on the north side of Chicago. The only Ryder Cup rookie for Europe is Nicolas Colsaerts, the big hitter from Belgium. With the majors and World Golf Championships, he already has played eight times in America this year, and has been invited to play in a PGA Tour event in two weeks in California.

There are no surprises in this Ryder Cup, only stars.

"Both teams are pretty much even and it's going to be a close match," European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said. "I don't see any favorites."

When the matches get under way Friday at Medinah, they will feature the two strongest teams in the 85-year history of the Ryder Cup. The entire 12-man team for the United States was part of the 30-man field at the Tour Championship last week in Atlanta, joined by five of the seven Europeans who were eligible.

For the first time, the 24 players from both sides are among the top 35 in the world ranking.

Europe has four major champions and four players who have been No. 1 in the world. Three of the four rookies for the U.S. team have won majors in the last 13 months ? Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. The Americans have experience at the top ? Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk collectively have played in 21 Ryder Cups and 90 matches. The Europeans have experience where it matters ? winning.

It all starts to unfold Friday morning before a raucous crowd in the Chicago suburbs with a Ryder Cup that has all the trappings of a heavyweight prize fight.

Olazabal fought back tears at the mention of his mentor, the late Seve Ballesteros, during the opening ceremony. And while he won't be the same kind of captain as Ballesteros in 1997 at Valderrama, he seems to be following the same principles.

"Just play hard, play with passion and win the damn points," Olazabal said.

He sent out two of his best teams for the opening session of foursomes ? Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell (Furyk and Brandt Snedeker), followed by Donald and Sergio Garcia, a tandem that has never been beaten in four alternate-shot matches. They will face Mickelson and Bradley.

So strong are the teams that among the four players U.S. captain Davis Love III sat Friday morning were two of the four major champions this year ? Watson and Simpson.

"We had a tough decision, and it wasn't who to send out. It was who to sit down," Love said.

About the only thing missing has been fodder for the tabloids. Familiarity in this event is breeding civility, not contempt.

"This is not a war. It's a golf watch," Love said. "It's a friendly golf match."

During the opening ceremony, after host Justin Timberlake was finished reading a poem, both captains made a point of emphasizing friendship.

"These matches are not life and death," Love said. "Golf has to be played with a certain spirit of graciousness or it's not golf at all."

It wasn't always that way, especially when Europe began to win and then the Americans started to care. Ballesteros was the spiritual leader of those European teams, using the Ryder Cup as a chance for them to prove they were not second-class citizens to the PGA Tour. And it didn't help when the marketing slogans promoted a contentious week, whether it was the "War on the Shore" or the "Battle at Brookline."

By the sound of so many players, they might as well be cuddling in Chicago.

"Love Ian Poulter to death," Watson said Wednesday.

Most evident about this shift in the Ryder Cup was Monday afternoon at an airport some 45 minutes away. Olazabal flew over from London with the gold Ryder Cup trophy. Only three players from his team traveled with him, because the rest already were in America.

Paul Lawrie, back after a 13-year absence in the Ryder Cup, remembers 11 players on the plane when they traveled to Boston in 1999. The exception was Jesper Parnevik, who had moved to Florida years earlier.

"I think there's definitely less of a 'them-and-us' type of thing now from everybody's point of view," Lee Westwood said. "The players play with each other a lot more regularly since the start of the World Golf Championships, and the fact that the top world-ranked players get pulled together a lot more regularly. There's a feeling that the crowd knows the European players a lot better."

Has it become too friendly?

Not long after the Presidents Cup began in 1994, the International team complained that they should have a home game instead of always playing in America. Fred Couples suggested moving the matches to Lake Nona in Florida, where most of the international players lived. Now, there are five Europeans at Lake Nona ? Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Peter Hanson are permanent residents, and Sergio Garcia also has a home there.

The mere suggestion that the Ryder Cup turns soft was enough to make Poulter shudder.

"It means too much," Poulter said. "It means too much to Europe. It means too much to us for it to ever lose that edge."

Olazabal made that clear during the opening ceremony when he turned to Love and said, "I know how much you and your team want to win this love gold trophy back," Olazabal said. "But I have to tell you, we have every intention of taking it back with us."

Not even Medinah figures to produce much of an advantage to the Americans. About half the members on each team played in the PGA Championship on this tree-lined course in 2006, and so many of them play an American brand of golf these days, anyway. They are used to fast greens. Love has ordered the rough to be cut down to help his power hitters, but Europe has its share of power.

The difference figures to be the home crowd. Thousands of fans dressed in red, white or blue have crammed into Medinah over the last few days, yelling chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A!" when they see the Americans walk to the first tee or onto the driving range.

As the matches drew closer to starting, there was chirpiness to the chatter. The Americans felt as though Europe had some of its official party in the grandstand behind every hole, watching to see how the Americans practice and even counting off the steps by a caddie to figure out potential hole locations.

Poulter caused a brief stir when he said that he had many friends in America, "but, boy, do you want to kill them in Ryder Cup."

Mickelson has been involved in the Ryder Cup longer than any player on either team. He made his debut in 1995, playing alongside five players who would go on to become U.S. captains. The next seven captains for Europe played in that Ryder Cup.

The way Mickelson sees it, only the competition remains intense.

"I think over the last 20 or 30 years, a lot of the animosity that might be there because they don't know each other is gone, because we do spend so much time with each now, especially the best players on the team," Mickelson said. "I think a lot of strong relationships are formed. And I don't see one week affecting that."

Museum Day, 2012: Brandywine River Museum, Philadelphia Art Alliance, Allentown Art Museum, Delaware Art Museum, Biggs Museum of American Art, Montclair Museum, Newark Museum
In what has become a welcome tradition, tomorrow, Saturday, September 29, 2012, is Museum Day here in the U.S.

Sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine, an offshoot of the cultural cornucopia of museums known as the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, all of which are free every day, Museum Day is a chance for participating museums to open their doors for free to encourage new visitors, albeit in a controlled, limited way.

Every U.S. household can order two tickets for any one museum, choosing from an extensive list of participating museums across the country. Not all of them are art museums, but a significant number are.

Most of the museums participating are smaller, regional museums. However, those, as I have pointed out in the past, are often treasure troves of wonderful specialized collections.

You can use the Find a Museum page on the event?s website to find a museum in your area, either by typing in a location, or by choosing from a dropdown menu of states.

You must order tickets online ahead of time.

For more, seee my previous posts on Museum Day 2011 and Museum Day, 2010.

Tigers take AL Central lead

DETROIT (AP) - Most of the 32,360 fans at Comerica Park groaned when Jhonny Peralta hit a tailor-made double-play grounder that looked set to end the eighth inning.

Andy Dirks made them cheer.

Jhonny Peralta's grounder brought home the go-ahead run because Dirks' hard slide broke up a potential inning-ending double play in the eighth and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Wednesday night.

"I was just trying to break up the double play and try to get a piece of him any way I could to help us score that run," Dirks said. "That's just kind of the way you play baseball."

Detroit wound up alone in first place for the first time since before play on July 24 when the White Sox lost to Cleveland later.

Triple Crown candidate Miguel Cabrera was robbed of a tiebreaking homer in the fifth inning by Alex Gordon's catch above the left-field wall.

Detroit found a way to break through the eighth.

It appeared as if Kansas City was going to keep the score tied when Peralta hit a grounder to third baseman Mike Moustakas. Dirks, though, slid so late and hard that second baseman Irving Falu didn't attempt a throw, allowing pinch-runner Don Kelly to score what he said was most important run of his career.

"Peralta was slow getting out of the box, so that's an easy double play," Moustakas said. "I'm always going to go to second on that play, but Dirks did a heck of a job to break it up."

Dirks was swarmed by teammates in the dugout to celebrate the gritty, clean play he made.

"That's good, old-fashioned baseball," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Delmon Young hit an infield single with one out in the eighth off Kelvin Herrera (4-3) and was replaced by Kelly, who stole second base and took third on Dirks' single.

Detroit's Alex Avila hit a two-run homer and Austin Jackson had a solo shot in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Cabrera, who went 0 for 4, started the day with the AL lead in batting average and RBIs and was one homer behind Texas' Josh Hamilton. Baseball hasn't had a player lead a league in all three categories since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

Cabrera was close to pulling into at least a temporary tie with Hamilton for homers, but Gordon prevented him from hitting his 43rd homer.

"It was hit so high that I had plenty of time to find the fence and get ready," Gordon said. "I thought I might have to climb the wall or at least jump, but at the end, I just had to put my glove up."

The Tigers have won six of nine games on their final 10-game homestand and 32 of their last 43 games at Comerica Park. They had, however, lost 11 straight one-run games since beating Toronto 3-2 on Aug. 23.

Kansas City has lost four straight - three consecutive against Detroit - after winning four in a row, including two against the White Sox.

"I love my team," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We've played three games here, and we're 0-3, but we're in these games and we're not far from the point where we are going to be consistently winning these teams.

"No matter what has happened this year, we've gotten knocked down and gotten right back up. These guys fight every day, and they are going to do everything in their power to beat Detroit in these games."

Detroit starter Rick Porcello lasted just four innings, giving up four runs and seven hits.

"His velocity dropped and that was a red flag for me," Leyland said.

Luis Marte got two outs in the fifth and Al Alburquerque gave up only one hit over 2 1-3 innings. Joaquin Benoit (4-3) allowed one hit in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game for his 32nd save in 37 chances.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings.

Young doubled and Dirks singled to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second.

Kansas City went ahead 3-1 in the third inning after Falu, David Lough and Billy Butler doubled. Jeff Francoeur's solo homer in the fourth inning gave the Royals a three-run lead.

NOTES: Detroit is sending Doug Fister (10-9) to the mound in its final scheduled home game Thursday afternoon against Kansas City and Luis Mendoza (8-9) before the Tigers close the regular season on the road against Minnesota and the Royals. ... Guthrie was 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA in his previous nine starts all of which were Kansas City wins. ... Porcello, who hadn't pitched since Sept. 16 because a rainout led to his previous scheduled start getting skipped, is 0-6 in his last eight outings. ... Yastrzemski told reporters in Boston on Wednesday that playing meaningful games down the stretch with help Cabrera's attempt to win the Triple Crown. "One thing that's going to help him is he's in a pennant race," Yastrzemski said. ... Falu matched a career high with three hits.

Harman shows off its upcoming JBL docks and speakers, we go eyes-on

Harman showsoff its upcomming JBL docks and speakers, we go eyeson

Harman announced a fair amount of JBL-branded speakers back at IFA, but that wasn't all it had to announce before the year goes out. Today we met with in the company in NYC, where it was ready to show off even more of its upcoming wireless and dock speakers. In fact, don't tell Harmon that the 30-pin connector is on its way out, as its $199 OnBeat Venue (seen above and $139 OnBeat aWake are ready to pair up with your last-gen iOS devices. The Venue is rated for a peak output of 30-watts and features a stow-away dock a tweeter and woofer combo for both stereo channels, component outputs for use with TVs, an obligatory 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth if you'd prefer to go wireless. The aWake shrinks things down to about 13 watts, and features a digital clock so that you can use it on your bedside night stand -- despite its small size, it'll easily dock an iPad. Both systems also work with free JBL apps for iOS that'll enhance the experience. According to the company, it's also working on solutions for the Lightning connector, but wouldn't reveal any hard details.

Moving along to dedicated speakers, you might recall the SoundFly BT, which recently got outed during its trip to the FCC. The 20-watt Bluetooth-equipped unit is strictly intended to plug directly into wall outlets, having only a status light with no inputs or buttons. It'll set you back $149 when it hits shelves, and if you tack another another $50 you can get an AirPlay-equipped version instead. We gave the BT a quick listen and it sounded surprisingly big with a fair amount of bass extension -- impressive considering it's petite and it plug-friendly design. A Harmon rep even noted that the hotel we were in was interested in procuring some for its rooms. Sadly, the units aren't remotely water-resistant, even though our demo area was a bathroom.

Lastly, we're actually most intrigued by the $59 Harman / Kardon BTA 10 dongle. The nearly matchbook-sized box connects to any speaker via its 3.5mm jack, allowing you to stream over Bluetooth 4.0 on the fly. Power is supplied via a micro-USB cable, and a blue indicator light lets you know that it's powered up. Harmon's mainly created it to add Bluetooth functionality to its non-wireless speakers, but it can be used with any speaker of your choice. We're also told that it overs very high-quality, despite being Bluetooth, thanks to some in-house development dubbed as TrueStream. There's no exact word on when all of these units will hit shelves, but you can peek the galleries for better looks -- check the source link for full details.

Here's Why The Apple Maps Debacle Really Is ... - Business Insider

Ap

Scott Forstall, the guy in charge of iOS

Apple's native mapping application is turning into the debacle we thought it would become.

On a micro-level, this is a short term pain for Apple. It will make its maps app better and better. By this time next year we expect Apple's maps to be very good.

Remember, Apple isn't collecting data on its own. It's partnering with TomTom, which has 30 years of experience with mapping. TomTom's maps app doesn't get people lost. Something is getting screwed up when Apple translates TomTom's data. Apple should be able to fix this.

On a macro-level it's a really big concern for Apple because this wasn't unexpected. We predicted Apple would fail to deliver a quality mapping application back in June.

And if Apple, a company that is supposed to be a premium brand, can no longer be trusted to deliver high quality experiences then it will quickly lose consumer trust.

Apple has not been very good at delivering first generation software lately. Siri, for example, is a big let down. iMessage is very buggy. The Podcasts app is a disaster. The Lion operating system felt half baked.

Based on this recent history, we believed there was simply no way Apple was going to be able to deliver such a thoroughly complicated application as maps without there being a bunch of hiccups and bugs. And so we said, Apple maps was a disaster waiting to happen. (We also said Apple was taking a huge risk.)

Sure enough, Apple did deliver a subpar experience.

As Apple fights with Google and its Android software, making errors like this are simply unacceptable. The margin for error gets tighter and tighter with each passing year. The number one thing Apple has going for it over Android is that it is believed to be a premium brand that doesn't deliver buggy crappy software.

If it can no longer be trusted to deliver top of the line software, then Apple as we know it is toast.

Venture capital or private equity? The entrepreneur's dilemma

If you?re a small technology-based business and you want to grow, at some point you?ll need more money than you can raise from operations, or borrow from family and friends. That?s when you will need to turn to professional investors, in the form of a venture capital (VC) or private equity firm that will inject cash in return for a share of the business.

But which is the best option, and what are the risks and rewards of each?

The biggest difference is that a venture capital firm will typically invest, for the short to medium term, in companies at a relatively early stage of their development, when the risks of failure are higher. Many investment companies will either fail, or just putter along without doing anything spectacular.

To compensate for that risk, the successful company had better do spectacularly well ? and so the typical VC will want to exit within three years, for perhaps ten times their initial investment.

As a result, it?s an understatement to say that a VC investment comes with some strings attached; they?re more like heavy-duty industrial cables. Strict performance requirements are standard, as are explicit dividends, determined upfront, which accrue until they can be paid. The VC will typically also demand the right to liquidate their investment ? which may require the right to sell the company as a whole.

Also, don?t expect that as the founder you are automatically the right person to continue as MD or CEO. Part of the value a VC brings is to scale the business, and identify roles within the business (however senior) that need specialised managerial skills. Successful VCs are not, in general, cuddly sorts of people. It?s their job to be hard-headed to the point of ruthlessness; there is, after all, a lot at stake.

So inviting and accepting a VC investment is not a step to be taken lightly, or because it?s some kind of start-up status symbol. The purpose of VC is to provide the funds you need to grow, and so the investment is not a sign that you?ve made it ? it?s the cue to work harder and more seriously than ever.

The typical private equity investor, on the other hand, has a slightly lower appetite for risk. They are more likely to take a five- to ten-year view, investing in a company that already has an established track record and can offer good turns ? if not the spectacular ones demanded by the venture capitalist. A private equity investor will also bring a wider range of skills to the board.

On balance, if you can possibly afford to self-fund for just a little longer it may be worth hanging in there until you become worthy of the private equity funders? attention. If you know that your growth ambitions are doomed to fail without that early cash injection, go for the VC option. But in either case, keep your eyes very wide open ? and take all the experienced advice you can get.

Amazon Could Be Working On A Square Competitor

Amazon swipeRumors have been coming in that Amazon is readying a mobile payments product that could compete with Square, Intuit GoPayment and PayPal Here. A tipster and an industry source both tell us that Amazon is going after smaller chains of retailers for the product, and could be offering significantly lower credit card processing fees for merchants. Rumors are that Amazon could be offering a rate as low as 1.9 percent. Current offerings include fees of around 2.7 percent. So what could this mean? It would make sense for Amazon to enter this market and transition from powering online transactions and checkout to in-store transactions. Amazon already has a payments infrastructure in place with its own PayPal competitor, Amazon Payments. Of course, it's important to note that PayPal has much more reach and usage from independent online sites than Amazon Payments. It will also be interesting to see whether Amazon will go after smaller, individual merchants, which would play right into Square's bread and butter.
