Ridiculously Photogenic Girl Snaps Post-Surgery Pics, Becomes Viral Sensation
A 28-year-old known only as Rachel has gained viral fame, and a nickname - Ridiculously Photogenic Girl - after posting downright adorable pics of herself after surgery.
“I’m currently in the ICU of the Cleveland Clinic,” she wrote on Reddit. “My pain is being reasonably managed, but I cannot fall asleep. Anyone care to entertain me?”
Judging by the response, the answer was yes. The post got 612 comments, many about her beauty, and became its own meme, with takeoffs on the pic such as this:
Rachel, an Army wife and mother from Dayton, Ohio, has congenital emphysema, a lung disease she’s had all her life but was recently exacerbated by pneumonia.
Nearly 60 percent of her right lung was damaged and had to be removed.
“I begged my surgeon to let me see it when he got it out,” she wrote. “He took pics, though, and I will get to see them today. Anyone want to check them out??”
No, but 612 people are clearly happy to check her out. Not that we blame them. Rachel said even she was surprised by how great she looked after major surgery.
“I am just as surprised as everyone else that I managed to look like that,” she wrote. “I was on so many pain meds ... I couldn’t feel anything but happiness!”
Even Ridiculously Photogenic Girl is human, though. When the painkillers wore off, "it was a very different picture in there," Rachel conceded.

Less couch time equals fewer cookies
Simply ejecting your rear from the couch means your hand will spend less time digging into a bag of chocolate chip cookies.
That is the simple but profound finding of a new Northwestern Medicine study, which reports simply changing one bad habit has a domino effect on others. Knock down your sedentary leisure time and you'll reduce junk food and saturated fats because you're no longer glued to the TV and noshing. It's a two-for-one benefit because the behaviors are closely related.
The study also found the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires two key behavior changes: cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables.
"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," said Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of the study published in Archives of Internal Medicine.
"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."
With this simplified strategy, people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them, according to the study.
Spring wanted to figure out the most effective way to spur people to change common bad health habits: eating too much saturated fat and not enough fruits and vegetables, spending too much sedentary leisure time and not getting enough physical activity.
She and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients, ages 21 to 60 years old, with all those unhealthy habits into one of four treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure.
During the three weeks of treatment, patients entered their daily data into a personal digital assistant and uploaded it to a coach who communicated as needed by telephone or email.
Participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the three-week treatment phase. But when that phase was completed, patients no longer had to maintain the lifestyle changes in order to be paid. They were simply asked to send data three days a month for six months and received $30 to $80 per month.
"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said.
The results over the next six months amazed Spring. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."
From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the six-month follow-up, the average servings of fruit/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9; average minutes per day of sedentary leisure went from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7 and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.
About 86 percent of participants said once they made the change, they tried to maintain it. There was something about increasing fruits and vegetables that made them feel like they were capable of any of these changes," Spring said. "It really enhanced their confidence."
"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

Secondo quanto riportato, l?aumento avverr? in scala 1-5.

Analyzing Mayor Fischer?s City Budget for FY 2012-13
by Brad Yost on May 26, 2012
Friday on Byline WFPL?s Political Editor Phillip Bailey provided review and analysis of Mayor Greg Fischer?s austere budget plan for 2012-13. The spending plan does not raise taxes and balances the budget without Metro employee layoffs or furloughs, and gives non-union city workers a 2 percent raise. Metro Government had faced a $20 million shortfall in the coming fiscal year, but filled that hole with $13.5 million in projected revenue estimates and selling two downtown parking lots to the Parking Authority of River City for $10.7 million. Metro Council members will hold budget hearings over the next month.

Real Estate Shopping Tips For All Buyers | Boca Highend Real Estate
When you are buying property, always have a cash reserve for unexpected expenses. Buyers will often calculate the final closing costs by combining the amount for the down payment, any points that go to the bank, as well as any prorated taxes for real estate. Most of the time, closing costs also include improvement bonds, school taxes and other considerations.
If you have found a home that you are considering buying, be sure to get online and research the registry for local sex offenders. You can do this quickly and easily, and it could keep your whole family safer in your new home. The information is publicly available and free to obtain. It is highly unlikely that any real estate agent would have knowledge of the sex offender status within a neighborhood, and if they do, you won?t find out about it. Google up the registry yourself!
So you want to find a place to purchase, but firstly you have to have a real estate agent who?s qualified. It?s important to find an agent you can really trust. An agent that has achieved success in the past will be a great choice. Always conduct sufficient research to identify those agents most dedicated to customer service.
If you want a great investment in buying property, you should think about repairing and remodeling it. As you work on the home, the property value will increase and therefore, you will see the benefits of your investment immediately. Sometimes it will rise more than you have invested.
Have your minimum down payment that?s required by your mortgage company. The alternative to a proper down payment is PMI, or private mortgage insurance. This can add quite a bit of extra money that you would have to pay on a monthly basis to show the bank that you are able to make payments on your mortgage.
Being organized is helpful when purchasing real estate. You should have a notebook full of the information you get from newspapers, friends, online, and also from your agent. If you use this method, you will have all of your findings in one place if you need to refer to it.
If you are considering starting a business, select real estate that is in an acceptable neighborhood. Starting a new business in an area of high crime and dilapidated buildings will not win you many customers. Talk to a real estate professional to find out what locations are ideal for starting up a new business.
It really is a buyer?s market when it comes to real estate. Now that the housing market has crashed, property values have gone very low. This makes it a perfect time to move from that apartment into a home of your own. The downward trend is an aberration when you look at house prices over the long term. Therefore, you will probably make money on your investment after ten years.
When buying a home, if you own a vehicle it is important to find out if there is good parking around the place. This is especially important if a home has no driveway or garage. Otherwise, you may have to take quite a hike at the end of each and every day due to being unable to find a close parking spot.
If you haven?t bought your dream home, it may be time to start looking. The conventional wisdom is that since the housing bubble has popped, selling and buying a bigger home is not economical, but some experts disagree with this thinking. You might want to buy your dream home now, housing prices will probably go up from here.
When you are trying to work out a deal, you should first make a priority list on your goals. You need to be able to identify anything that you have an issue with and relay how you expect each issue to be handled. Establish your priorities and let those be your guide in negotiations. Remember to approach the negotiation process with a flexible mindset. You can?t get everything on your list so concentrate on the true priorities.
Have a professional inspector look at the home you are interested in. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a home that needs complete renovation from the ground up when you weren?t expecting it. Not only will this cost a lot, you might need to change your living situation until it?s fixed.
If a new potential rental property has a garden, make sure you ask your landlord about it. Landlords differ on this; some leave it to you to maintain the yard or the garden. Other properties have it recorded in the lease that this is part of the rental money which is paid.
If a home has made your short list, have the home inspector get the home?s dimensions. Ascertain by checking public records that the owner has correctly listed the square footage of the home. These numbers should be fairly close to each other, to a tolerance of about 100 sq ft. If they don?t match, find out more about the property and any changes that were made.
Research rental properties. If you are thinking about buying rental property, hold off on purchasing it until all records have been reviewed for at minimum the past 24 months. You need to find out if the person who is selling it to you is giving you the right info about what income it can generate. Your lender will probably want to view verification of income prior to issuing the property?s purchase loan.
By implementing the preceding advice, the process of purchasing a home should be simpler and should go more smoothly. Having an understanding of what you can expect is only half of this battle.

Divorce Attorney Montgomery County - Personal Injury Law - Fox ...
Last updated 6 hours 57 minutes ago
Accidents happen all the time?however, if you suffer a personal injury due to downright carelessness of a third party, then you may be entitled to compensation and have the right to file a claim. If you want to file a claim, contact a?personal injury lawyer?to help you through the process. This article will explore the concept of?negligence?and the role it plays in personal injury law.?
- What is negligence in a legal context??
Negligence is from the Latin word?neglegere,?which literally means ?not to pick up.? Negligence doesn?t refer to intentional or specific harm, but rather carelessness that leads to a person getting hurt or even dying. For example, if a business allows clearly unsafe conditions to exist on its property, then that business is negligent and is responsible for any injuries incurred.???
? - When is negligence applicable?
If a surgeon operates on the wrong?part of the body, then he is being negligent. Negligence is not applicable, however, if a surgeon performs a patient-approved, high-risk surgery that fails. Negligence is only a factor when there has been an error that could have been easily avoided. This applies to car accidents, dog bites, slip and fall injuries, and nearly any other time someone exercises carelessness.
? - What should you do if someone is negligent??
If you or a loved one has become the victim of someone?s negligence, you may be able to file a personal injury claim. You should hire a personal injury lawyer immediately to lay out your case and present the guilty party with proof of carelessness. Most of the time, the guilty party will see that you have a good case and will?settle out of court. If not, then the case will go to trial and be settled by a judge or jury.
If your life is no longer the same because of someone?s careless mistake, then you may be entitled to compensation. Contact Fox and Fox Attorneys at Law?our?Montgomery County?personal injury lawyers?will be happy to review your case and recommend the next course of action. New York's last French church fights to survive
It has long served as the spiritual home of New York's French-speaking Catholics, but the Church of St. Vincent de Paul is nearing its end as the faithful grow fewer and the building lies in disrepair.
But Manhattan's last francophone parish, where French singer Edith Piaf got married in 1952, is resisting a decision taken five years ago by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York to shutter it for good.
Dedicated in 1869, the church is a shadow of its former self. Stained-glass windows depicting the story of France are chipped, and plastic bins lay across the floor to collect rain from the leaky roof while yellow cautionary tape marks areas damaged by the water.
Some pews can no longer be used and the plaster is crumbling. Refurbishing the church would cost an estimated $5-10 million, and the archdiocese has decided it is not worth it.
Alarmed by the pending closure, a nonprofit group is going into overdrive to save this gathering place for a diverse group of French, Belgian and Swiss expatriates along with mostly French-speaking African and Haitian immigrants.
It has already tried three times, in vain, to get a hearing with the Landmarks Preservation Commission. And the non-profit group, Save St. Vincent de Paul, tried again in early May, underlining the church's architectural merits, its history-laden past and its lively present.
"This is not a neighborhood church. It's a church where people come, sometimes from very far away," said Olga Statz, a Haitian American lawyer who has attended St. Vincent since childhood and is now leading the non-profit preservation drive.
"It's an architectural treasure," she added, pointing to the delicate craft of the stained glass windows and the monument to French Americans killed during both World Wars. St. Vincent was also the first integrated church in New York.
Volunteers began distributing flyers after Mass in April to rally the faithful, and funds were collected for repairs.
"For the French and African francophone community, it's a unique gathering place," said Sylvie Hulot, who is preparing the confirmation of about 40 children.
Choir director Sylvestre Kouadio said it's not just a building that's at stake -- it's an entire community.
"We don't live in the same neighborhoods, and this community, which comes together despite socioeconomic differences, is going to be destroyed," he said.
Hulot noted that the parish is bristling with social activities such as a food pantry, clothing donations and French and English lessons.
But on any given Sunday, the homily rings out among the mostly empty pews. A hundred people at most attend the service, said the church's pastor, the Reverend Gerald Murray.
"This parish is in a lot of difficulty, and the diocese also has difficulty, because we have many parishes and not as many parishioners as we used to have," he said.
"So even though it's sad to think of closing the church, at some point the bishop has to do that."
Joseph, an Ivorian who comes to collect for charity each Sunday from neighboring New Jersey, said that "for the church to live on, it needs the faithful."
"It's our responsibility," he added.
The church's faithful have moved over the years, the archdiocese explained.
A century ago, they lived "overwhelmingly" in Manhattan and the Bronx, said spokesman Joseph Zwilling, adding that national parishes created to minister to French, German and Italian immigrants have gradually disappeared.
"We have to move from a model of an archdiocese based on what the conditions were in 1912 to address the conditions as they exist in 2012 and years to come," he said.
After years of waiting for the hammer to fall, Kouadio expressed hope that somehow his church would be saved.
So far, he said, someone has been listening to his prayers.
"This plot of land would be a very valuable place on which to build a condominium or whatever other commercial structure. And I think that that is the reason" for the archdiocese's decision to close St. Vincent, Statz said.
"It's not because this is a dying church."
But Zwilling said no date has yet been set to close the church, and that the New York archdiocese is looking for another solution for the faithful to continue to attend services in their native language.

PayPal lines up 15 retailers for mobile payments, will let you buy Jamba Juice smoothies with a smartphone
Although PayPal's mobile payment system started out small with a Home Depot deal, that snowball is quickly rolling itself into a boulder. Starting next month, 15 extra US retailers will be happy to see you slap down your smartphone (not literally, we hope) instead of a credit card. The selection leads us to think a lot of smartphone owners like to shop for wearables -- Aéropostale, Foot Locker and JC Penney are in the batch, along with others -- but there's a few useful exceptions, like Barnes & Noble, Jamba Juice and TigerDirect. At least a total of 20 merchants are expected by the end of year, and as with Home Depot, you won't need special hardware besides an Android or iOS device to spend your hard-earned cash. We'll just be thankful we won't have to buy our yogurt with actual cash, like savages.

Yahoo seeks to shake up search, Web browsing
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo is joining the battle to redefine Internet search and taking aim at building a better Web browser, too.
The troubled Internet company is taking its shot with a new tool it calls "Axis" that alters browsers made by other companies so search results can be displayed in a more convenient and compelling format.
Yahoo Inc. released Axis in Apple's app store late Wednesday. That version will work only on Apple's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The software also can be installed as a plug-in on most major browsers used on desktop computers and laptops. Apps for other mobile devices are in the works.
Browsers running Axis can display search results in a panorama of visual thumbnails that can be scrolled through above a Web page. It's a departure from search engines' traditional presentation of a list of staid Web links that require more navigation and guesswork.
All the major search engines are adopting new formats in an effort to make it easier for their users to find the information they want without having to click from one page to the next.
Two weeks ago, Microsoft Corp. previewed an upcoming change that will spread Bing's search results in three columns, including one devoted to personalized recommendations pulled from Facebook, Twitter and other social networking services.
Last week, Google unveiled a new search feature called a "Knowledge Graph" that seeks to provide more immediate answers by highlighting information from a database containing more than 500 million entries about people, places and other commonly requested things.
"Searching through links has outlived its utility," said Shashi Seth, a Yahoo senior vice president. "Users are demanding more now because we are all short on time."
Yahoo is counting on Axis to reverse its steadily declining share of the Internet's lucrative search market and drive more traffic to its own website from the growing audience of people surfing the Web on smartphones and tablet computers.
Although Axis works on desktop browsers, its greatest appeal figures to be on mobile devices. That's because the search results can be seen at the top of the device just by flicking on whatever page might be on the screen at the time. Much like Google's Knowledge Graph, Axis draws its results from a custom-built index. Most of the data in the Axis index resides on Yahoo's own services. If Axis can't find answers there, it presents links from Bing's search index.
Yahoo has been relying on Bing's search technology since 2010 as part of a decade-long partnership formed to lure users away from Google. So far, though, most of Bing's gains have come at Yahoo's expense
But Yahoo was losing search traffic well before it began leaning on Bing.
Yahoo's share of the U.S. search market stood at 13.5 percent through April, down from nearly 25 percent five years ago, according to the research firm comScore Inc. Bing holds a 15.4 percent share, up from 9.4 percent five years ago when Microsoft operated a search engine under a different name and system. Google's share has climbed from 56 percent five years ago to more than 66 percent now.
Yahoo's alliance with Microsoft gives it the flexibility to offer unique search features, such as Axis, that Bing doesn't have. Getting people to use its search engine more frequently is important to Yahoo because it keeps 88 percent of the revenue generated from requests made on its service, but doesn't get any money when a query is entered directly on Bing.
The erosion in Yahoo's Internet market share has been a major factor in a financial malaise that has caused the company's stock to slump for years and contributed to the management turmoil that has taken Yahoo through four CEOs ? including two interim leaders ? during just the past nine months, when it was working on Axis.
Yahoo won't show ads next to Axis search results initially, but the company believes the visual format will be ideal for video commercials and graphical marketing.
In an effort to make Axis even more useful, Yahoo plans to store search activity on its servers so users can have access to their past activity on any computer or mobile device where they log in. Axis will accept the logins that people use on Google and Facebook, as well as Yahoo.
The biggest challenge facing Axis may be overcoming the perception that Yahoo stopped innovating in search when it joined forces with Microsoft.
"If it's good enough and cool enough, people will go out of their way to get it," predicted IDC analyst Karsten Weide.

Bret Michaels PETS Diabetes PETSMART Dogs Horses Rats Cats ...
Fans of old school heavy metal know Michaels as the front man for Poison. Others know him from the highest rated VH1 show ever, ?Rock of Love.? And Michaels won ?Celebrity Apprentice? in 2010.
The star has been battling Type-1 Diabetes since he was 6. A series of health scares were played out in front of America during his final weeks of ?Celebrity Apprentice.? It began with an emergency appendectomy. Less than two weeks later, Michaels was back in the hospital with a brain hemorrhage, which was followed by a transient ischemic attack. (TIA occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain stops for a brief time, triggering stroke-like symptoms. A TIA is felt to be a warning sign of an impending stroke). This was followed by heart surgery. Michaels is 49.
?I?ve been so blessed,? he says. ?I know it sounds very clichéd, but when you go through something like that and come out the other side doing just fine?,? he says, pausing. ?I sure don?t take life for granted.?
Michaels says he was both surprised and thankful for the outpouring of public support as he faced each crisis. Today, he?s past the string of setbacks and is very busy creating rock ?n roll gear, as well as toys and accessories for pets, with partner PETsMART.
Pets have been a part of Michael?s life since childhood. His first pet was a German Shepherd his dad named Tarkus Arlicicus.
?It was some sort of Romanesque name,? Michaels says. ?To be honest, I never knew why we named him that; we just called him Tark.? He says that having a pet helped to teach him responsibility. Along came cats, horses and more dogs.
Today, Michaels? menagerie includes two German Shepherds (still his favorite breed), Diesel and Phoenix; horses Bo and Ness; and his pet rats, Harley and Charlie. He talks lovingly of his beloved rats Marley and Chester, who passed away.
?I?m telling you, rats are smart, clean and friendly. It?s not like Ben and Willard. They?re unbelievable,? says Michaels. ?We need to create some rat toys.?
While the rat toys haven?t yet materialized, his Pets Rock line of toys and accessories will be available in stores and online around the end of May, with more products to be released through the summer, and in the fall, a line of cat toys called ?Look what the cat dragged in.?
?Love me or hate me, it doesn?t matter, you?ll love the ball with my face on it,? Michaels says and laughs. ?Dogs can fetch me, or not; maybe they?d rather bury me in the yard.?
Michaels says he had a hand in designing everything, then ?the pet experts? insured that each product would be safe. In addition to toys, the collection includes stylish t-shirts (for dogs) ? one with a skull and crossbones. Of course, Michaels? trademark bandanas are replicated so pets can wear them. One dog bed is pink, but a skull with wings adds macho rock ?n roll appeal.
There?s even a rock tour bus dog toy. Inside the toy bus are other toys, band members, groupies and a driver. It?s the toy that keeps on giving. As the dog shakes the bus, a band member or groupie might fall out.

Mortgage application filings rose 3.8% for the week ending May 18 as low interest rates spurred along refinancing activity, an industry trade group said.
The Mortgage Bankers Association said refinancing application activity shot up 5.6% while an index measuring home purchases fell 3% from a week earlier. ?????
"Continuing negative developments in the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, particularly in Greece and Spain, as well as the recent French elections, which have shifted political power in a manner that will likely show less support for European austerity, helped push the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield below 1.7 percent last week," said Michael Fratantoni, MBA's vice president of research and economics. "Mortgage rates again dipped to new record lows in the survey, which spurred more borrowers back into the refinance market.? As a result, applications for refinance loans have increased for the third straight week and are at the highest level since February of this year."
Refinancing activity rose from representing 74.9% of all mortgage activity to 76.6%.
Mortgage rates continued to decline with the 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage with conforming loan limits under $417,500 falling from 3.96% to 3.93%, the lowest rate in the survey's history.
Meanwhile, the 30-year, FRM for jumbo loans saw its rate jump from 4.20% to 4.25%. ?The average contract interest rate for the 30-year, FRM backed by FHA fell from 3.75% to 3.73%.
The 15-year, FRM remained unchanged at 3.26%, the lowest rate in the history of the survey.
In addition, the 5/1 ARM rate increased from 2.80% to 2.83%.

Aggressive Chicago prosecutor Fitzgerald to quit
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Patrick Fitzgerald, the aggressive U.S. attorney in Chicago whose investigations ranged from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to CIA leaks and two consecutive Illinois governors, said on Wednesday he would step down effective June 30.
Fitzgerald, 51, who was appointed to the post just days before the September 11, 2001, attacks, is the longest-serving U.S. attorney in Chicago history.
He is known for taking a hard line on political corruption, and has overseen thousands of criminal cases, including those of organized crime bosses, former Chicago officials who rigged city hiring, and supporters of terrorism.
Fitzgerald was also lead counsel in the 2007 trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the chief of staff and national security adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney, which resulted in Libby's conviction on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.
Under Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney's Office also convicted media baron Conrad Black.
Fitzgerald, who is married with two young children, has no future employment plans and will take time off this summer before considering career options, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office statement.
"He will be a tough act to follow - that's the understatement of the day," said Andy Shaw, president and CEO of the Better Government Association, a Chicago-based political watchdog group. "He brought a level of commitment and passion and skill to that job that elevated it to a new level."
Shaw said Fitzgerald was "in a class of his own" because he had no political agenda, which was illustrated by his office's successful prosecution of an Illinois Republican governor, George Ryan, and then a Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich.
While Shaw said Fitzgerald did not wipe out political corruption in Illinois, he reduced it. "People think longer and harder about misbehaving in part because of the force of his office," said Shaw.
After Blagojevich was charged with trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat President Barack Obama held before he won the 2008 presidential election, Fitzgerald said authorities had halted a potential crime spree that would have made Illinois legend Abraham Lincoln "roll over in his grave."
Fitzgerald could make even the top levels of Washington power quake when he acted. Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush's most powerful White House aide, was investigated by Fitzgerald in the illegal leak of a CIA agent's name to a journalist.
Rove said in his book "Courage and Consequence," that when he learned in a letter from Fitzgerald in 2006 that he would not be prosecuted for his role in the scandal, he wept.
'PROSECUTOR'S PROSECUTOR'
In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called Fitzgerald "a prosecutor's prosecutor" who served the American people "with the utmost integrity and a steadfast commitment to the cause of justice."
His arrival in Illinois rocked Chicago's political world because the city had been used to U.S. attorneys who were part of the local political and legal class.
The mild-mannered son of Irish immigrants, Fitzgerald is a native of Brooklyn, New York, who worked college summers as a janitor. Fitzgerald graduated from Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in economics and mathematics in 1982, and from Harvard Law School in 1985.
Before coming to Chicago, Fitzgerald worked with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, where he participated in prosecutions involving the August 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.
Fitzgerald was nominated to the Chicago federal prosecutor post by Republican U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald (no relation), who ignored pressure to appoint a local lawyer.
In 2007, Patrick Fitzgerald was named The National Law Journal's "lawyer of the year." Two years earlier, before his marriage, Fitzgerald was named to a People magazine list of the sexiest men alive."
Shaw said he hoped senior Illinois U.S. Senator Richard Durbin made a nationwide search for the prosecutor's replacement.
Matt Orwig, the former U.S. attorney of the Eastern District of Texas, who is now a partner at Jones Day in Dallas, said he talked with Fitzgerald once about whether he was interested in going into private practice.
"He was very focused on his job and could not be distracted by any offer," said Orwig. "He said when he left he would leave first and then decide what he wanted to do."
"Pat is someone who listens to his inner voice and he just thought it was time," Orwig said of Fitzgerald's decision.

Mountain lion killed in downtown Santa Monica, Calif.
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Police shot and killed a mountain lion that somehow made its way through an urban landscape before it was found early Tuesday in a downtown Santa Monica office building courtyard near an outdoor mall and a bluff-top park that offers tourists views of the ocean and the city's famed pier.
Authorities made multiple attempts to try and subdue the young male cat, including use of a tranquilizer and a pepper ball, before killing it, said Capt. Daniel Sforza of the state Fish and Game Department.
The mountain lion was found about 6 a.m. by a janitor in the courtyard near a popular open-air mall, the Third Street Promenade, and just a couple of blocks from the beach. The street that has a preschool, a church and other businesses was cordoned off as a precaution.
"It's not a risk we can take with public safety," said police Lt. Robert Almada.
It wasn't immediately known how the cat ended up in the middle of the city. The National Park Service has been monitoring mountain lions with GPS radio-collars and cameras more than two miles away in the Santa Monica Mountains.
A typical home range for mountain lions is around 200 square miles for adult males, said the agency that has been conducting a study since 2002 in the Santa Monica Mountains to determine how urbanization is affecting the large cats.
Jeff Sikich, a biologist working on the long-term study for the National Park Service, said a mountain lion had never been seen in the area where the cougar was found.
There are currently about 10 mountain lions in the Santa Monica range but the lion killed in the city was not among those previously known, he said.
Sikich said that by age 1 1-2 lions disperse from their mothers and try to establish their own territories, which are so large that one adult male could claim the entire Santa Monica range.
Young lions, however, are trapped within the range because it is bordered by freeways to the north and east, the ocean to the south and an agricultural plain to the west. Dispersing young males that encounter urban areas usually turn around, and those found dead have either been hit by cars or killed by an adult male defending its territory, Sikich said
"Large carnivores need a lot of space," he said.
Sforza said a necropsy will be performed to see if the mountain lion had rabies or any other diseases.
"It's very unusual," Sforza said of finding the mountain lion. "It's just really hard to speculate."
Lorraine Miller, 89, said she was driving to her novels class, part of a college emeritus program for seniors, when she learned the mountain lion was in the building's courtyard where she was supposed to go.
"It seemed at first it was some kind of tall tale," said Miller, who has lived in Santa Monica for more than 40 years. "Then after a while you see all of this action. It was overwhelming."
Mountain lions are one of the most widespread carnivores in the world with a historical range from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Hundreds of mountain lion sightings are reported every year in California, but attacks on humans are rare. Between 1890 and 2007, there have only been 16 attacks in the state, according to Fish and Game statistics.
Miller said she believes killing the mountain lion was the right, but unfortunate, option.
"In my opinion they were taking care of the public," Miller said. "Frankly you can't object to being taken care of."
Sikich, the biologist, said mountain lions are elusive and generally avoid people, but they are wild, unpredictable animals and this one was in an unnatural situation.
"It was a tough situation, especially for the lion, but also for everyone involved," he said.
Sikich, who arrived after the killing, took some of its hair for testing to determine if it is related to the other lions of the Santa Monica range, which lack genetic diversity because of their entrapment.

Dear Children's Home Society and Family Services ? Land of ...
Last November, I went to Korea and searched for my Korean family with the G.O.A?L. First Trip Home program. Before I left, I had my chain jerked a few times by my American adoption agency, Children?s Home Society and Family Services?(CHSFS) and my Korean agency Eastern Social Welfare Society?regarding my Korean family search.?You can listen to the podcast about the situation here >>
Now, that I?ve taken time to process the whole experience, I have this message to CHSFS.
Dear Children?s Home Society and Family Services,
My brief engagement with your post-adoption services in November 2011 was one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences in my adoption experience to-date. I really wanted my belief that adoption agency policies and procedures were not adoptee-centered to be dispelled via my contact with your post-adoption services department. However, that belief was only confirmed by the communication that transpired between the post-adoption social worker and myself. To be clear, the messages I received were not malicious or hostile, but they were subtly dismissive, confusing, and frustrating at a time when I felt very vulnerable. I do not believe that CHSFS was deliberately trying to create a negative environment or punish me as an individual. But, as a person who has seen adoptee-centered support in action, I can only conclude the following:
CHSFS has not taken advantage of the vast adoptee/adoption support resources in their own backyard. Minnesota is the land of a gazillion adoptees and the land of several non-agency adoption focused organizations who have developed and provide adoptee-centered services. Perhaps you have heard of AdoptSource, AK Connection, Adoptees Have Answers, etc.? That you have not partnered with any of your neighbor organizations suggests to me that you do not recognize the quality of work that is being performed right next door.
CHSFS has not listened to its growing population of adult adoptees about their experiences and needs. If adoptee experiences and feedback were taken into account by CHSFS and incorporated into practices and policies, I would be not writing this letter. And, adoptees who come to you for services you purport to provide would not feel disempowered, frustrated, hopeless, or angry.
CHSFS doesn?t really want to help adult adoptees. Your agency has access a plethora of adult adoptee adoption professionals, adoption researchers, and adoption-focused organizations that could make your agency a leader among agencies and, yet, you remain in the status quo.
Please, please, please prove my conclusions to be wrong. I don?t want to just dish out criticism, this isn?t just venting ? I want to be proven wrong. I want the experience of the next adoptee who contacts CHSFS for services to negate the awful experience I had. The only thing I want to conclude about your agency in the future is that you ?get it? and that your are putting your knowledge into action through partnerships, policies, and practices.
Sincerely,
Keum Mee

Contraceptives Birth Control: What You Should Know About the Birth ...
Progesterone represents the hormonal basis for the birth control shot. With this contraceptive method, an amount of progesterone is injected in the woman's upper arm or buttocks, for a three-month pregnancy prevention. Progesterone blocks the release of the eggs from the ovaries. According to statistics, the birth control shot is one of the most convenient and efficient of all contraceptive methods. Only 3 in 100 couples have an accidental pregnancy while using the shot.
The efficiency of the method depends on how correctly it is used, on existent health conditions and on the interaction with other medications. There are some side effects that you need to be aware of when it comes to the use of the pregnancy control shot:
-depression;
-irregular periods or absence of periods;
-breast tenderness;
-headaches;
-weight gain.
Doctors warn users of the higher risks of using the pregnancy control shot on the long run. Studies have revealed that the administration of progesterone for contraceptive purposes could lead to loss of bone density. Normally, the bone density gets back to normal when you stop using the shot.
A way of fighting this inconvenience would be to use a calcium supplement on a daily basis. It is of paramount importance to stay in touch with your doctor, as well as to be honest about your health condition and lifestyle habits that might interfere with the use of hormonal birth control. For example smokers are more prone to developing side effects than non-smokers. Make sure you tell the doctor if you smoke.
The birth control shot does not work well for every individual. This is a number one issue to keep in mind when making a decision. Women who have difficulty remembering to take the pill or nursing mothers often go for the pregnancy control shot as an easy way to be safe from unwanted pregnancy. Yet, some medical or other special conditions make the birth control shot less effective or risky. This form of contraception is not recommended for women who have suffered or currently suffer from:
-various forms of cancer;
-migraine headaches;
-unexplained vaginal bleeding;
-blood clots etc.
You should talk to the doctor about whatever condition you might suffer from in order to prevent any dangerous situation that may compromise your health. There are various other contraceptive methods besides the birth control shot that can be a lot more suitable for your individual specificity. Don't ignore health matters for the sake of convenience.

garden glimpses: a stitch for a thought
May is traditionally a busy time. ?Seems more so this year. My husband has been busy with work (praise God!). ?Son home from college. ?Son about to graduate from high school. ?Finishing up everyone's schooling for the year. Fundraising events for the ministry I'm involved with as well as meetings and trainings. ?Yard work to be completed. ?
And a quilt.
Can't give too much away at this time since the recipient's mama may see too much. ?All those blocks have been sewn together into a quilt top which is on my quilt frame almost completed. ?Hope to finish the quilting today so I can hem it, then send it. ?Ahhhh, how I enjoy doing this!
What's strange about this spring though is my seeds are bought and the garden is tilled, but my desire to get out there and plant is missing. ?I look out there, I smile at the neat furrows of dirt, and I turn to do something else. ?I don't remember this happening ever before. ?I mean, there's been years when we had new babies or weddings or whatever that I considered not putting a garden in. ?During those times there was a strong desire to have a garden; ?the lack of time was the factor.?
This year I can make the time, but the strong desire is gone. ?
Maybe it's the making the time that is the problem. Gardens take a LOT of time. ?There's planting, weeding, thinning, watering, harvesting that takes place over about the four month period and our garden is fairly large. ?My family is growing up and the four oldest at home will all have jobs that will take most of their weekdays throughout the summer. ?That leaves me and my almost nine year old daughter for garden tending. ?Do I really want to take my "free" time at home to garden?
Because life has changed. ?My life has transitioned over the last few years to nurturing relationships. ?Lots of relationships. ?Family. ?Friends. ?Ministry volunteers. Complete strangers. ?And relationships take time. ?Time to connect. ?Time to listen. ?Time to encourage. ?Time to love. ?
Gardens need time, too, to be nurtured into growing a bountiful harvest. ?
And yet, I keep getting pulled back to how the time spent in my garden always nurtures me. ?It's my quiet time outdoors. ?I can think, pray, and get some sunshine. ?It refreshes, recharges, and renews. ?It's those very things that help me to nurture others.
Hmmm, I think I'll ponder this a stitch at a time today as I glance above the quilt at my garden outside the window....
Blessings,
Tammy ~@~
