How does your consultation process work?

Your Vibrant Table Coordinator is your primary contact, helping you develop ideas, menu, a time line, and other details. We are happy to join you for several meetings, and remain in close telephone and email contact throughout the planning process. About two weeks before your event, we assign a day-of Event Manager who manages staff and works side-by-side with your coordinator, to be sure your big day runs seamlessly.

What are your top 5-10 tips for brides and grooms regarding their photography on the day of?

1. Think about what?s most important to you: music, food, the look, photography, location, etc? That way the professionals can help craft an event that first and foremost reflects you, but we can also help you identify where you might want to invest more of the budget and where you can save.

2. Be open about your budget. We understand it?s sometimes difficult to talk about the bottom line, but if your vendors are aware of your budget, they can help you maximize it according to your priorities and can offer realistic suggestions.

3. When shopping around, compare ?apples to apples.? Caterers, like all vendors, may present proposals very differently. Sometimes all your expected charges may not be included at first. Ask about staffing, included equipment, service charges, gratuity, transportation fees, etc. Something that looks too good to be true at first glance probably is. How awful it would be to find out weeks before your wedding ? or even worse, on your honeymoon ? that your reception will cost much more than you expected!

4. Your venue has a significant impact on your catering costs. Is there a kitchen or does your caterer need to create one? Does the venue provide tables and chairs? Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up groups of Palestinian stone-throwers on Friday as annual Land Day rallies turned violent.

Palestinian activists have called for a "Global March to Jerusalem" to mark the day when Israeli Arabs protest against government policies that they say has stripped them of land.

Arab news channel Al Jazeera reported in a live blog on its website that the Israeli army was "pushing protesters back towards Ramallah with the use of tear gas and water cannons".

It also reported that there are close to 1,000 protestors gathered in Ramallah.

Israeli forces were put on high alert at frontier crossings with Lebanon and Syria but there were no reports of any protesters nearing the border fences, unlike last year when several demonstrators were killed there in Land Day protests.

However, violence flared at checkpoints in the occupied West Bank to the north and south of Jerusalem. Witnesses also reported disturbances at gates leading into the Old City, with police looking to limit access to the revered al-Aqsa Mosque.

A Reuters reporter saw two men being carried away injured after scuffles at Jerusalem's Lions' Gate, while police said they had made several arrests at the nearby Damascus Gate.

Jerusalem is a focal point of conflict, as Palestinians want the city's eastern sector, captured by Israel in a 1967 war, as capital of a future state. Israel has annexed East Jerusalem as part of its capital and insists the city remain united.

"We are determined to march together toward Jerusalem, and hopefully we will break through and reach it," said a masked youth, calling himself Rimawi, as he faced off against soldiers in the West Bank city Ramallah, a short distance from Jerusalem.

Flag-waving crowds neared the Qalandiya crossing out of Ramallah, some of them hurling stones at the security forces, but were forced back when border police sprayed them with foul-smelling liquid from a water cannon.

Land Day commemorates the killing by security forces of six Arabs in 1976 during protests against government plans to confiscate land in northern Israel's Galilee region.

Arabs make up about a fifth of Israel's total population. Many complain of discrimination. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently called for improved efforts to integrate Arab citizens into Israel's work force.

BBC News reports (?Hundreds of Afghan women jailed for ?moral crimes,??, March 28) on the ?[h]undreds of Afghan women [currently] in jail? for ?crimes? including running away and extra-marital sex. The story follows a report from Human Rights Watch that casts blame on the government of Hamid Karzai, noting that ten years after Taliban rule these outrageous ?moral crimes? continue to be punished ? and brutally so.

As strong believers in individual sovereignty and autonomy, market anarchists argue that the state?s principal manner of acting is to make peaceful interactions crimes while protecting the institutional crime of ruling class elites. In an essay titled Vices Are Not Crimes, published in 1875, American lawyer and anarchist Lysander Spooner defined crimes simply as ?those acts by which one man harms the person or property of another.?

Market anarchists still hold roughly to Spooner?s formulation and accordingly see the state, which necessarily initiates force against person and property, as simply a glorified criminal enterprise. Under the pretext of protection people from themselves and from their own vices, the state engages in all kinds of villainy and misconduct.

Further, the predicates of an economically thriving and prosperous society are inextricably bound to those of a more generally free and peaceful society ? one in which the discretion of individuals is left unmolested. As both a practical matter and a philosophical one, freedom in economic affairs can?t be isolated in any meaningful way from freedom in what might be considered ?private affairs.?

Market anarchists appreciate the link between all kinds of freedoms, and are committed to a comprehensive understanding of liberty that accounts for their causal interconnectedness. The entire economic system of the present moment is built upon prohibitions against perfectly peaceful and consensual activities, and not just those such as drug use that some regard as ?vices.?

Zoning laws dictate where you?re allowed to open a business; building codes determine the kinds of dwellings that you may construct; and professional licensure restricts the choices you have as to how you?ll make a living. This list of banned though genuinely peaceful undertakings goes on and on, and all supposedly to protect us from ourselves.

All of these interventions into the economic aspect of human life create scarcities that represent both a windfall for the powerful interests they protect and an accompanying definite and significant diminution in overall human freedom.

Observing that ?very small results? had come of ?efforts to draw the lines between the virtues and the vices,? Spooner and contemporary market anarchists prefer to consult a more definite boundary. The exercise of coercive authority over the individual, we argue, is all that a free society ought to prohibit. As in Afghanistan, if the business of defining ?vice? is left to the state, all free people will before long be branded criminals.

In a stateless society, the full scope of nonviolent, non-invasive action thus remains open to every member of society, unhindered by the meddlesome and arbitrary commands of the state. And from the free interplay of individuals, even granting their vices, a more vibrant and productive society is educed.

Those who lament the moral decline of society would do well to focus their disapproval toward the state, the present day?s (and history?s) foremost source of injustice and immorality. If Afghanistan is unique at all ? and arguably it?s not ? it is only so in the degree of its monstrousness, not in its barbaric punishment of innocent people.

Anarchists ask that individuals who leave others alone in their legitimate prerogatives themselves be left alone. Were that one simple rule observed, fully and across the board, the state would pass away and crimes like those in Afghanistan would be a memory.

US orders for long-lasting goods rise 2.2 percent

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. companies ordered more long-lasting goods last month, showing businesses are willing to buy equipment and machinery even after an investment tax credit was halved.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that orders for durable goods rose 2.2 percent in February after a steep drop in January. Greater demand for machinery, computers, autos and aircraft drove much of the increase.

Orders for so-called "core" capital goods, a good measure of business investment plans, rose 1.2 percent. Demand for these goods fell in January by the most in a year, after the full tax credit expired.

A durable good is expected to last at least three years. Orders can fluctuate sharply from month to month. Still, orders have been steadily rising since the recession ended nearly three years ago.

In February, durable goods orders totaled $211.8 billion, 42 percent above the recession low. Orders remain roughly 14 percent below their peak in December 2007.

The increase in February disappointed some economists, who had hoped to see a bigger gain in orders. Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics, noted that orders for commercial aircraft were much smaller than expected.

"Otherwise, the orders data were encouraging," Ashworth wrote in a note to clients. Excluding airplanes and other transportation equipment, orders rose at a 1.6 percent pace, close to economists' forecasts.

Last year, businesses could reduce their taxable profits by an amount equal to the cost of a major investment. That credit fueled a jump in orders for industrial machinery, computers and other capital goods. Spending on core capital goods surged nearly 3 percent to an all-time high in December.

The credit this year lets companies write off only half the cost. Many economists believe that change was a big reason for the January drop off in durable goods and core capital goods.

Shipments of core capital goods rose in February. But they are still below December's total. As a result, business investment in equipment and software isn't much higher than it was in the final three months of last year, Ashworth noted. That's a big reason economists expect economic growth to slow to about a 2 percent annual pace in the current quarter, down from 3 percent in the final three months of last year.

Still, business investment is expected to stay strong this year. Surveys show that business spending should increase in the April-June quarter, Ashworth said. Many companies delayed upgrading their facilities during the recession and are starting to catch up.

A vibrant manufacturing sector has helped drive the best job growth in two years. The economy has added an average of 245,000 jobs per month since December, which has lowered the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent. Manufacturers have added an average of 37,000 jobs per month during that time.

Thousands massed in Havana for pope's Mass

HAVANA (AP) ? Tens of thousands of people have massed in Havana's Revolution Plaza for Pope Benedict XVI's Mass on the final day of his visit to Cuba.

Many people are standing under umbrellas to shade themselves from an already blistering sun as they listen to prayers broadcast to the crowd. Benedict made his way to the plaza in his white popemobile. A massive Cuban flag was draped next to the plaza's iconic image of revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

Benedict will celebrate the Mass at the shrine of Cuba's revolution before meeting with its leader, Fidel Castro.

Castro announced late Tuesday that he would happily meet with Benedict, saying he was asking for just a "few minutes of his very busy time."

HAVANA, Cuba (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI wraps up his visit to Cuba on Wednesday with an open-air Mass in the shrine of the Cuban revolution, hoping to revive the Catholic faith in this communist-run country. His other appointment: a meeting with Fidel Castro.

The former Cuban leader announced late Tuesday that he would happily meet with Benedict, saying he was asking for just a "few minutes of his very busy time" in Havana.

The Vatican had already said Benedict was available, so the confirmation from Castro ends weeks of speculation as to whether Castro would repeat the meeting he held with Pope John Paul II during his historic 1998 visit.

"I will happily greet His Excellency Pope Benedict XVI as I did John Paul II, a man for whom contact with children and the humble raised feelings of affection," Castro wrote.

Benedict's Mass in Revolution Plaza comes 14 years after John Paul preached on the same spot before hundreds of thousands of people, Fidel among them. Then, an image of Jesus Christ was displayed opposite the plaza's iconic image of revolutionary hero Ernesto "Che" Guevara, a remarkable development for a country that had been officially atheist until 1992.

This time, a huge poster of Cuba's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, covered the facade of one of the buildings facing the plaza near Che. The icon has been the spiritual focus of Benedict's three-day visit, timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the appearance of the diminutive statue.

Benedict visited the statue in a sanctuary near the eastern city of Santiago on Tuesday morning and prayed to her for greater freedom and renewal for all Cubans ? another gentle nudge to the government to continue opening itself up to greater reforms.

"I have entrusted to the Mother of God the future of your country, advancing along the ways of renewal and hope, for the greater good of all Cubans," the pope said. "I have also prayed to the Virgin for the needs of those who suffer, of those who are deprived of freedom, those who are separated from their loved ones or who are undergoing times of difficulty."

A top official in Havana quickly responded: "In Cuba, there will not be political reform," said Vice President Marino Murillo, Cuba's economic czar.

Before arriving on his trip to Mexico and Cuba, Benedict asserted that Marxism as it was originally conceived is irrelevant for today's reality. Upon arriving on Cuban soil, however, he his language was less direct, and he pressed instead for the Roman Catholic Church to play a greater role in Cuban life and for Cuba's people to enjoy greater freedoms.

The Vatican spokesman said the Holy See didn't take Murillo's comments as a rebuff to Benedict's call, noting that the pope isn't a political leader who can change laws or political systems. But he said Benedict does have some concrete hopes for the visit.

During a nearly hour-long meeting Tuesday with Cuban President Raul Castro ? twice the normal length of papal audiences with heads of state ? Benedict asked that the government declare a holiday for Good Friday, when Catholics commemorate the death of Christ.

The request, like so much of this trip, was a follow-up of sorts to Cuba's decision to declare Christmas a national holiday in honor of John Paul's 1998 visit. Cubans hadn't had Christmas off for nearly 30 years.

"It's not that it changes reality in a revolutionary way, but it can be a sign of a positive step, as was the case of Christmas after John Paul's visit," said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The government didn't give an immediate response, but Lombardi said it was natural for Cuba to take time to consider it. The government frequently declares holidays at the last minute and Good Friday this year falls in less than two weeks, on April 6.

Benedict also raised "humanitarian" issues with Raul Castro, an apparent reference to political prisoners. Lombardi said he didn't know if individual cases were discussed.

Primarily, though, Benedict came to Cuba to try to win a greater place in society for the Catholic Church, which has been marginalized in the six decades of Castro family rule.

The island's Communist government never outlawed religion, but it expelled priests and closed religious schools after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Tensions eased in the early 1990s when the government removed references to atheism in the constitution and let believers of all faiths join the Communist Party.

John Paul's 1998 visit further warmed relations. But despite years of lobbying, the church has virtually no access to state-run radio or television, is not allowed to administer schools and has not been granted permission to build new places of worship. Only about 10 percent of Cubans are practicing Catholics.

"Naturally a papal visit hopes to be an impulse for further steps, be it for the life of the church or for the good of society in its entirety," Lombardi told reporters, citing media, education and health care as areas where the church wants a greater say.

But in a country that once preached atheism and still is dominated by Marxist thought, that's a hard sell for the government and for ordinary Cubans alike.

Ana Blanco, a 47-year-old Havana resident, complained that people were being told to attend Wednesday's Mass, saying the pressure seemed odd in a country that in her early years taught her religion was wrong.

"Now there's this visit by the pope, and I don't agree with giving it so much importance or making anyone go to the Mass or other activities," the office worker said. "Before it was bad, now it's good. That creates confusion."

Cassini set for Saturn moon pass

The Cassini spacecraft is to make its lowest pass yet over the south pole of Enceladus, an active moon of Saturn which may harbour a liquid water ocean.

The flyby, at an altitude of 74km (46mi), will allow Cassini to "taste" the jets of ice and water vapour that gush from the moon's polar region.

Several lines of evidence suggest these jets are fed by a liquid water ocean beneath Enceladus' outer icy shell.

The spacecraft's closest approach will take place at 1930 GMT on Tuesday.

The scientists will use Cassini's Ion and Neutral Mass Spectrometer instrument to learn more about the composition, density and variability of the plumes from Enceladus.

Scientists previously detected salts in these jets, which suggested the sub-surface liquid water ocean was probably in contact with Enceladus' rocky core.

This makes Enceladus an even more important target in the search for life elsewhere in the Solar System, as rocks could furnish the ocean with the chemical ingredients thought essential for life.

The plumes erupt from fissures at the south pole known as "tiger stripes".

Last week, scientists presented evidence of a connection between the jet activity on Enceladus and the way Saturn's gravity stretches and stresses the fissures.

The results were outlined by Terry Hurford, from Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) in The Woodlands, Texas.

However, about 35% of the observations could not be explained by tension in the jets' source regions.

Some of the large corporations that are involved along with IBM include JP Morgan Chase, Kellogg?s, ?Pfizer, Caterpillar, Citi, ?JohnDeere, AMD and Facebook. ?The U.S. Small Business Administration has also gotten behind it.

But Is It Realistic for Small Businesses?

When I first heard about this from Laurie McCabe?s site, I thought it was a great idea. I was excited and decided to try it out.

What I discovered is that the paperwork and requirements are daunting.

First, let?s talk about the paperwork. ?Bureaucracy is a huge barrier to growth for small businesses ? even the perception of heavy?bureaucracy is a barrier. ?According to the Wall Street Journal, one business owner reported that completing a Supplier Profile is ?not a one-hour routine? but takes commitment.

Most small businesses don?t have anything near the 500-employee limit for this program ? instead, think 5 employees. ?That is a much more common size for a small business. ?In a 5-employee small business, there?s rarely anyone you can assign who will have all the knowledge to complete the paperwork. ?The business owner will likely be handling the paperwork himself or herself, probably in the evening (since that?s the only time available).

Beyond the paperwork is the whole issue of whether you can meet the system?s mandatory requirements. ?I started filling out the application and managed to get through the first four steps out of 9, in 20 minutes. ??Hmm, that?s not so bad,? I thought.

Then I got to step 5, the Environment section. It stopped me cold. ?For instance, how many of?you could say ?yes? to the following?

• Does your company have a Corporate Responsibility and Environmental Management System, which measures performance, sets goals, and discloses results?
• Does your company define, deploy, and sustain your corporate responsibility and environmental management system through your engagement with your suppliers?
• Does your company cascade this set of requirements to your suppliers who perform work that is material to the products, parts and/or services being supplied to your customer?

In all, there were over 20 questions about environmental, ISO9001 and ISO14001 compliance, 16 of them required fields to answer.

Very few small businesses with under say, 20 employees, could say yes to the above questions. ?And what if you answer ?no?? ?Well, you are required to specify the exact day, month and year when you plan to be in compliance. ?In our business we ?have no plans to create environmental policies and systems. ?Being an Internet publisher we shut off lights when we don?t need them, recycle paper and soda cans, avoid printing emails and documents unless absolutely necessary, and use power management options on our computers and other equipment. ?But we do not write corporate policies about those actions ? we just do them.

Our suppliers (other small businesses and entrepreneurs) would laugh ? or cry ? if we asked them if they complied. ? There?s no way that even if we wrote policies and systems, that we ?could ?cascade? that requirement to our suppliers.

So that was the end of my attempt to complete the application. ?I gave up.

Some Bright Spots

On the other hand, I do see positives with this program:

• For those who go through the paperwork process, it is something that can give your business a competitive edge. ?Just think of all those who will give up or can?t meet the requirements.
• Another positive: ?you can start the application process and save it as a draft, and finish or edit it later. ?That way you can divide up the work and spread it out over a few days if you need to.
• Finally, there?s just the fact that this directory exists. ?IBM is to be commended for starting it. ?In concept it?s a great idea.

I urge IBM and all the other corporations involved to streamline the requirements to make them more realistic for small businesses. ?Otherwise, the Supplier Connection will be more about medium size businesses. ?And I?d love nothing more than to come back and update you that the application has been streamlined.

The levels of the chemical in the water are unsafe for residents to drink, according to DES hydrologist David Bowen.

"We established a health-based drinking water standard of three parts per billion," he said. "So far, we have eight houses that exceed the drinking water standard either on Emery Drive or Belknap Drive. They range up to 16 parts per billion, above the standard."

The state has done periodic testing of the neighborhood wells since 2002, when DES first found chlorinated solvent contaminants in the water. The state installed water treatment systems in many homes in the neighborhood, but this contamination is new.

"1,4 Dioxane is a solvent stabilizer that doesn't break down readily and is not removed through the water treatment," Bowen said. "It's used in a number of industries as degreasers for metals and actually contained in many household cleaning products, like shampoos."

Bowen said they haven't been able to find a cause for the contamination yet in the quiet neighborhood and it seems to be separate from the issues in 2002.

"It's a residential area and there's no obvious industry," he said. "There's some businesses a half mile away. We're looking into a number of companies that may be responsible, but we don't know what is the source."

Jane Shields has lived on Belknap Drive for 16 years and has three children she's concerned about.

"The state tested and my water is OK, but my neighbor next door is not," she said. "I'm very close to it. Because of that, we've gone to buying big jugs of water. I don't feel like I really need to freak out yet, but if I were over the levels I'd be really concerned."

Shields said she and many of her neighbors are worried about property values and she discussed selling her home with her husband.

"We're just waiting and seeing what the state does," she said. "I don't know of anybody in our neighborhood that has cancer, so that right there is something. If there were a couple neighbors struggling with cancer, I'd probably be a lot more concerned."

The risks of Dioxane exposure are serious, according to David Gordon, health risk assessor for DES.

"Exposure to high levels over time can cause liver cancer," he said. "There are non-cancer health effects, too. It can cause toxicity to the liver or kidney."

The state recommends residents do not drink their water, though they can use it for washing clothes, dishes and bathing.

"Bathing is low risk because very little goes through the skin and only a small amount becomes a gas when heated," Gordon said. "The water is really going to evaporate from dishes and the contaminate stays with the water. The main focus is on what you're drinking."

Until DES finds the cause of the contamination, the state is providing bottled water for every home in the affected area. Town Administrator William Innes said he first found out about the problem on Jan. 27 and discussed it with selectmen.

"I talked to a number of people at DES and asked what can the town do to help our residents," he said. "We're looking at ways to make it easier for residents who have this problem to get water."

DES tested the water in November and residents in the area were notified in December.

Dowd said she thought the contamination was fixed years ago and is frustrated she still has to deal with it.

"I use bottled water to brush my teeth, make ice cubes and cook with," she said. "I will drink bottled water from now on. It's not worth the risk."

OpenTable shares rise after analyst upgrade

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shares of OpenTable Inc. rose Wednesday after a Benchmark Co. analyst said the online reservation maker's large market share combined with improvement in the economy led him to upgrade the stock.

He also said other companies could be interested in buying OpenTable Inc.

THE SPARK: Analyst James Dobson with Benchmark upgraded shares of OpenTable to "buy" from "hold," saying worries about the company's competition increasing are "overblown."

THE BIG PICTURE: Investors worried, when Google Inc. announced in September that it was buying restaurant review service Zagat, that competition from newer companies like IAC/InterActive Corp.'s UrbanSpoon and from Google could threaten OpenTable's lead in the market. The Zagat deal gave Google access to a big catalog of customer surveys and ratings.

OpenTable, which also posts customer reviews, mainly offers a reservation service. It went public in 2009.

THE ANALYSIS: Dobson said OpenTable works with far more restaurants than its competitors.

"We don't believe any domestic competitor poses a significant financial threat to OpenTable," he told clients in a note.

He also said the improving economy meant more consumers will feel able to spend money, and that should mean more reservations.

The company also could be a desirable acquisition for a big technology company such as Google or Microsoft Corp., Dobson said.

A spokesperson from OpenTable said that the company does not comment on movements in its share price.

THE SHARES: Up $1.06, or 2.7 percent, to close at $41.06 Wednesday. OpenTable shares are down by nearly two-thirds from the 52-week high of $118.66 they hit nearly a year ago, but they've risen by a third since December.

The soundbar has become a popular way to enhanced HDTV sound without getting a full surround speaker system. It's small, inexpensive, and usually just one or two pieces. The company's ZBase systems are one-piece sound systems that are more slabs than bars, yet offer a full range of sound response and much more power than an HDTV can produce. The $199.99 (direct) ZVox Z-Base 220 is the company's smallest sound system, built for smaller HDTVs but featuring lots of power. The Z-Base 220 features three 2-inch speaker drives, a 5.25-inch subwoofer, and 35 watts of power in its simple frame. It's not for audiophiles or home theater enthusiasts, but anyone looking to put some more power in their HDTV's sound will be pleased.

Design
The boxy Z-Base 220 is a shining example of "stealth boring" industrial design. It's so plain and flat that it might as well be invisible in a home theater system. This isn't a bad thing; some audiophiles like displaying their speakers, but many listeners prefer sound to fill the room without much thought about what's making it. The flat black grille, plain orange LED display, and 3.5 by 17 by 12.5-inch (HWD) matte black body blend into most furniture as an easily ignored chunk. Because it's so deep and weighs 12 pounds, it can't be easily placed in front of an HDTV or mounted on a wall. You need to have the surface space to support it. The Z-Base 220 fits easily under smaller HDTVs 17 to 27 inches ideally, according to ZVox, but bass vibrations mean it's best used with nothing on it. The company markets it as a device you can place your small HDTV directly on it, but that's not a good idea if you want to listen to anything with bass.

Under the black grill are small mute/power, volume, and input buttons and a 3.5mm input jack. They're tucked below the body of the Z-Base 220, so they don't interrupt the flat design. The back of the device holds two RCA stereo inputs, an optical input, and a coaxial input.

The fat membrane remote controls all of the Z-Base 220's settings. Besides power, input, mute, and volume buttons, the remote has buttons for surround sound modes, dialog emphasis, output leveling, and adjusting bass and treble. Besides multiple surround modes and adjusting high end and low end, there aren't many adjustments like EQ settings on the speaker.

Sound
I watched Predator on Blu-ray to test the Z-Base 220's sound and surround abilities. The gunshots were suitably loud and dialog was clear even without the dialog emphasis mode turned on. With it enabled, the midrange was boosted slightly and treble and bass seemed to be flattened, so while it indeed brought out dialog slightly, it hurt the other sounds and music. When the volume was pumped up to maximum, high-frequency sounds like the predator's actions became slightly crunchy.

Surround sound was less impressive. While the Z-Base 220 can accept 5.1-channel surround sound and produces simulated surround with its single box, it doesn't offer the imaging a real surround system or a set of well-spaced stereo speakers can produce. If you want a real surround experience, or a wide sound field, the Vizio VHT510 ($249.99, 4 stars) offers a wide sound bar with a wireless subwoofer and surround satellites for full surround sound, and the Samsung HW-D450 ($299.99, 3.5 stars) has a wide stereo field and much more bass response with its own subwoofer.

Even so, the room thumped impressively (if not as impressive as it would with a large, dedicated subwoofer), and the flat bass notes in The Knife's Silent Shout stayed clear until the highest volume levels, when the drivers began to distort. For a one-piece sound system, the Z-Base 220 has some pretty hefty bass response. But if you want to take advantage of that bass, you'll have to ignore the benefit of it being such a flat device; while the base didn't distort at all at most volume levels, anything placed on top of the Z-Base 220 vibrated horribly to the beat. While there are no grilles on the top of the device, you still shouldn't block it or put any pressure on it to ensure clarity and that nothing on it will vibrate. Without the top obstructed, though, the bass is surprisingly powerful.

If you want to enhance your home theater's sound, the ZVox Z-Base 220 is an inexpensive way to add plenty of power without any hassle. It's louder and sounds better than a cheap sound bar, and while it doesn't have the bass output or surround imaging of discrete speakers and a subwoofer, it's extremely easy to set up and unobtrusive to keep on a shelf under your HDTV. Just make sure you have the room for it.
