The Internet, Chairs Pose for Eastwooding Photos

Mitt Romney had to do several things in his Republican National Convention speech: make women like him, make working-class people like him, convince people who voted for President Obama in 2008 that it's okay to vote against him now, explain why Bain Capital is not scary, and give people some idea of how awesome his presidency would be. Did he do it?

(AP) ? The U.N.'s new envoy to Syria said on Saturday that President Bashar Assad's regime should realize that the need for change was both "urgent" and "necessary" and that it must meet the "legitimate" demands of the Syrian people.

Lakhdar Brahimi's comments in an interview with al-Arabiya television came as Syrian warplanes and ground forces pounded the country's largest city, Aleppo, with bombs and mortar rounds while soldiers clashed with rebels in the narrow streets of its old quarter, according to activists.

The latest violence shows that government troops are still struggling to regain full control of the city from the lightly-armed rebels nearly five weeks after they stormed their way into it in a surprise offensive. Activists said rebels also captured an air defense facility in the east of the country near the border with Iraq.

"The Syrian government realizes more than me the extent of the suffering endured by the Syrian people," Brahimi told al-Arabia on his first day as the new U.N. envoy in Syria, replacing Kofi Annan who quit after his six-point plan including an April 12 cease-fire failed to stop the bloodshed.

Speaking in New York, he said: "The need for change is urgent and necessary. The Syrian people must be satisfied and their legitimate demands are met." A former Algerian foreign minister and a seasoned international trouble shooter, Brahimi said he enjoyed the "full and clear" support of the U.N. Security Council.

He also called for an end to the violence but acknowledged that he does not have a set of preconceived ideas on how to resolve the Syrian conflict. "We will try to overcome the obstacles that Kofi Annan faced," he added.

The Syrian conflict has its roots in mostly peaceful street protests that started in March last year. It has since morphed into a civil war, with at least 20,000 people killed so far, according to rights activists.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the clashes in Aleppo were concentrated in several tense neighborhoods ? Hanano, Bustan al-Qasr, Sukkari and Maysar. It reported injuries and damage to buildings.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, said the government was making heavy use of warplanes in attacking rebel areas.

An Associated Press Television video showed rebel fighters, some in civilian clothes, in the street trading fire with government troops.

Activists say that this is the second day of a rebel push in Aleppo dubbed "Northern Volcano" targeting security facilities in the city and the surrounding province, including an artillery training school, a compound of the feared air force intelligence, and a large army checkpoint.

For over a year after the uprising against Assad's rule began nearly 18 months ago, Aleppo and Damascus stayed relatively quiet. But in July, rebels launched a brazen attack on the two cities, capturing several neighborhoods.

Government forces have regained most of the Damascus area but are being held at bay in Aleppo.

In the east, the Observatory reported that rebels captured an air defense post in the town of al-Boukamal in the oil-rich province of Deir el-Zour that borders Iraq. The opposition has claimed advances in the area in recent days.

A video released by activists showed soldiers who said they were captured at the post after rebels took it. The authenticity of the video could not be independently confirmed.

Despite the government's control of Damascus, opposition fighters continue to stage attacks using hit-and-run tactics in neighborhoods where they enjoy popular support, activists say.

Early Saturday, government forces bombarded the capital's southern neighborhood of Tadamon followed street fighting with rebels there, the Observatory said. The LCC said troops also shelled the nearby neighborhood of Hajar Aswad.

The state-run news agency SANA said army Brig. Gen. Taher Subeira, was killed by "terrorist" who placed a bomb under his car while parked in front of his Damascus home and detonated it when he got into the vehicle.

The Observatory said the bodies of five unidentified people were found in the neighborhood of Qadam, all shot execution-style.

Other clashes were reported in Idlib province on the border with Turkey, in Daraa near the Jordanian frontier, and in the central province of Homs near Lebanon, activists said.

SANA meanwhile reported Saturday that 225 detainees who took part in anti-government protests were released. The amnesty by authorities is the second in a week. On Monday, some 378 prisoners from Damascus and the central province of Homs were freed.

Rights activists say tens of thousands of Syrians have been detained over the past 18 months.

On Making Houses Resistant to Ice in the Municipality of Anchorage

Ice isn't really often a bad thing. There are places in the planet where it is an indispensable part of lives, such as in the Arctic and Antarctic regions where residences are practically surrounded by it. Even the planet needs ice as a part of its natural processes as ice regulates the globe's climate or weather pattern.

Ice is a notable part of the lives of individuals residing in Alaska, be it in Anchorage or Barrow. The bad thing about ice is that it can be a nemesis for homes which have poor protection against it or homes that are outdated. It can be specifically bad for houses that have wooden doors or windows. Roofing is a different issue entirely, as ice dams suggest trouble for roofs which have been mangled badly to the point of weakness.

The majority of the indications of destruction to these parts of a residence are manageable to locate. Any time there is a cold current turning up or a staining on your ceiling, it can be a certain signal that something is misconstrued. This indicates the time is best to change these components of your house-- with the help of your handyman of course.

Repairing roofing Anchorage Alaska homes have necessitates the requirement for a residence replacement specialist. Roofings aren't as very easy to repair as other areas of a residence, and improperly placed roof covering materials can additionally exacerbate things instead of resolve them. For roofings in Alaska, the greatest product to make use of would be steel roofs. While these roof coverings lack the aesthetic appeal and sophistication of other roofings like asphalt and clay-based, they offset this by easily protecting against snow accumulations and frost buildups which are the bane of most roofing systems.

Windows are an indispensable aspect of maintaining the internal temperature of a home balanced, and correcting balmy windows should be put in priority as well. Most Anchorage windows can effortlessly be replaced. Proper window replacements performed by a contractor or by yourself (if you want) should repair the problems prompted by old windows.

The last part in carrying out your house's overall repairs should be the replacement of an old, flawed door. The doors Anchorage residences have could be replaced by far better "green" doors which could conserve you a lot on energy expenses and enhance the appearance of your house. University professor held in ?Pussy Riot? murder

MOSCOW?Investigators say police have detained a man who has confessed to killing two women in a central Russian city, and then tried to mislead investigations by scrawling a message at the murder scene demanding freedom for jailed members of the Pussy Riot band.

The man ? a 38-year-old university professor named Igor Danilevsky ? was detained Thursday in Kazan, Russia?s Investigative Committee said on Friday. It said Danilevsky wrote ?Free Pussy Riot? on a wall in the victims? blood because he wanted the deaths of the 38-year-old woman he dated and her mother, 76, to appear as if they were a ?ritual killing.?

The Committee said Danilevsky had convinced the woman to take out a loan to repay his debts, and promised to marry her. Police had found the knife used to stab the women to death and disfigure their faces and bodies, it said.

Three members of the band were sentenced to two years in prison earlier this month for a February ?punk prayer? in Moscow?s main cathedral entreating the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Vladimir Putin, who at the time was on the verge of winning a third term as Russian president.

The trial, widely seen as Kremlin-orchestrated, caused an international furor, with celebrities such as Paul McCartney urging Russian authorities to free the band.

The jailed band members? attorney had called the two women?s murder ?either a horrendous provocation or a psychopathic? case.

Kremlin-friendly media and Orthodox Church clerics had seized upon the alleged link between the murder and the band to lambast the artists and their supporters, and compared them to mass murderer Charles Manson, whose followers used the blood of victims to write on the walls of their houses.

Some Russian publications ran headlines claiming Pussy Riot supporters ?committed? or ?inspired? the double homicide. The coverage was full of the mostly negative terms used by Kremlin-friendly television networks and media in their coverage of the protesters? trial.

The Orthodox Church has called the band?s stunt sacrilegious, but hundreds of artists, musicians and other intellectuals have signed petitions urging authorities to free them.

Wendell Tucker, Chicago Theater Artist, Undergoes 40-Day Fast To Raise Awareness About Black Men And Suicide

For the past 34 days, water and an occasional glass of juice have been the only source of sustenance for Chicago theater artist Wendell Tucker.

After two failed suicide attempts and a subsequent diagnosis of major depressive disorder last year, the 31-year-old set out to create "Wendell Tucker Hates The World," a one-man show based on his own struggles with the illness.

Tucker and his theater company, Theori Stages, recently wrapped a successful six-show run in Chicago and are currently 34 days in to his latest effort -- a 40-day fast and Indiegogo campaign aimed at raising awareness about mental illness in the black community, and $5,000 to take his show on the road.

?We were looking for something that would make an impact,? he told The Huffington Post.

On day 33 of what Tucker has called "The Hunger Aims," the importance of his mission became even more apparent.

According to the New York Daily News, hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, arousing new discussions on mental wellness and health in the black community. That discussion included comments from actor Malik Yoba, such as the following tweet:

Malik Yoba

Always with a smile when I saw him. RIP Chris Lighty!!! WTH?!! Black men are suffering silently and not asking for help. Men cry in the drk!

Yet still, Tucker?s show has received a number of negative reactions, including cynical tweets and skeptical critiques.

?We had a few people who just didn?t agree,? he said. ?They felt that, as black men, we didn?t suffer from depression or any of that -- that it was just an excuse to be lazy and not take responsibility for our situations in the world.?

Tucker pointed to the shocking suicides of Don Cornelius and Junior Seau earlier this year as proof that depression in black men is a cause for concern.

?Now you have Chris Lighty, one of the most brilliant minds in hip-hop,? said Tucker. ?It's like, whoa, okay this may be real.?

Not just real, but common.

Suicide is the third most common cause of death among African-American males between 15 and 24 years old, behind homicide and accidents, according to the American Association of Suicidology (AAS).

AAS statistics also show that African-American men are five times more likely to commit suicide than African-American women. And as a group, African Americans are more likely to experience a mental disorder than their white counterparts and less likely to seek treatment.

?It?s amazing that people you would never even expect, they?ve been depressed, they?ve also been admitted to inpatient therapy,? said Tucker, who called the suicide hotline one fateful night before deciding to go to the emergency room.

Not even Tucker's family knew about his diagnosis until they attended his show one year later.

?There?s all these people hurting,? he said. ?They?ve been told to pray on it or 'Man up. You can?t be depressed. Depression is for white women.? Everything except for ?Okay, maybe you should go get therapy.??

Earlier this year,Dr. Wizdom Powell Hammond, a UNC Chapel Hill professor and researcher, published the results of a seven-year study showing the benefits of African-American men openly discussing their stress when battling depression and suicidal tendencies.

?We can?t tell black men not to express their anger,? Hammond said in a recent interview with EBONY.com. ?Anger is a legitimate emotion. To not express it when it?s an appropriate response is, to me, problematic. We also have to be comfortable with the full range of emotions, to [accept that] anger is not the only response black men have to racism. They feel shame, they feel sad, the feel upset.?

With $4,100 to go, Tucker has eight days left to reach his fundraising goal. But regardless of whether or not he hits the target, he plans to continue spreading awareness through theatre, particularly in his own Chicago community, where he says 10 welfare centers and mental facilities have been closed during ?one of the deadliest years ever.?

?We?re going to keep going,? Tucker said. ?By no means is that going to be the death of it.?

Need help? In the U.S., call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
